The Alias 2 from Samsung and Verizon

 Samsung Alias 2

I like the dual-hinge on this phone. It makes you think your little phone is from a spy movie, or James Bond lab. The dual-hinge actually serves a purpose of revealing a QWERTY keyboard, and displays a widescreen. The 2.0 megapixel camera is good for still and video capture, and it sports Bluetooth too. The Alias 2 supports RemoSync, so those corporate folks can sync their emails and contacts with ease.

The Alias 2 has what Samsung and Verizon call "Lifestyle Features" which are; VZ Navigator, Visual Voicemail, Mobile Web, Mobile Email, and a Personal Organizer with Calendar, Currency Converter, Notepad, Alarm Clock, World Clock and a Stopwatch. The Media Center capabilities provide functions to allow game downloads, ringtones, wallpapers, location-based services and a few more functions.

The Samsung Alias 2 has an MSRP of $79.99 (which is the NET price after the $50 mail-in rebate). Expect a two-year costumer agreement. The rebate comes in the form of a debit card, so that you can easily spend this money. The "Lifestyle Features" do come with a price, and range from $2.99 per month to $9.99 per month.

Verizon Wireless Announces MP3 Store, Gives iTunes Some Competition

 Verizon phone, computer

Verizon Wireless announced at last weeks' CTIA trade show that they are now selling MP3's from their online media store. Verizon is the first mobile provider to offer full MP3's (not just ringback tones) from their online store. Customers simply choose from about 5 million titles on the site, preview the music, log in to purchase, download, and then play it on their computers or any MP3 player, including a Verizon Wireless music-capable phone. In case you were wondering (I know I was!), you don't have to be a Verizon subscriber to buy tracks.

Beginning April 7th, Verizon is offering tiered pricing for MP3s purchased online. The prices will be:
  • $1.29 for new releases and best-selling releases;
  • 99 cents for most major contemporary releases;
  • 69 cents for most classic catalog releases.

Visit Verizon's online store at http://mediastore.verizonwireless.com or http://vzw.com/mp3.

Verizon Wireless Introduces Friends & Family for Business

March 12, 2009 – In today’s business world, companies rely on their wireless service to keep operations running smoothly. That’s why Verizon Wireless is introducing Friends & Family® for Business on March 15 to give businesses even greater control over their wireless spending. Friends & Family for Business lets companies create a calling group made up of up to 10 numbers employees call most. The minutes used when placing or receiving calls from anyone in the calling group are considered Mobile to Mobile calls and do not count against the business’ plan minutes. Businesses can include the landline or wireless numbers of colleagues, clients and vendors who have yet to switch to the nation’s largest, most reliable network, and they can add or remove any of the numbers as frequently as needed.

“Business customers can help their bottom line with Friends & Family for Business,” said Rob Miller, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. “The feature gives businesses the flexibility to create their own calling plan. If a project is complete and there is no longer a need to call a certain vendor, they can simply remove that vendor’s name from the Friends & Family group and add a new contact – even if the number is to a landline or a person using another wireless carrier.” Read more

Verizon Hub: Your Next Internet Home Phone?

 Verizon Hub You may have heard about the new Verizon Hub, coming out today (February 1st). In fact, maybe you even read the press release we posted just last week. What is it? Let’s see…Verizon describes it as a “new touch screen home phone system designed to replace old-style home phones with a souped-up home communications system, bridging wireline and wireless connectivity in one simple service, that runs on any broadband connection -- whether supplied by Verizon FiOS Internet or DSL or any other high-speed service provider.”

What does that mean? Basically, Verizon wants to give families an easy way to communicate and manage calendars, contacts etc. from one device. You will be able to check traffic and weather, get driving directions, look up phone numbers, preview movie trailers…the Hub will even send you a text message to remind you of a meeting. The family can stay updated even if you’re not home, as you can make changes on the companion website and it will be updated immediately. It runs on your existing broadband connection and no, you don’t need to be a Verizon Wireless subscriber to use it.

Will it be a hit? Only time will tell. But in the meantime, head on over to Engadet for a hands-on review.
