When a Little Movie Will Do

Family using 8cm DVD Whether it’s a memorable vacation, an elegant wedding or just the kids playing soccer; it is sometimes difficult to fill a full 2-hour DVD with exciting, memorable video memories. In addition, a growing number of DVD camcorders are being introduced. All of the discs can go directly from the DVD camcorder or DVD burner and immediately be played in virtually any DVD player.

For the best in family short subjects, Verbatim has introduced a family of miniDVD media both DVD-R and DVD-RW as well as double layer DVD-R discs. Like the company’s popular Digital Movie DVD media, the discs look like movie reels. But unlike the larger discs, the 3-inch single layer Mini DVD discs hold 1.4GB of data (compared to 4.7GB) and the mini DL discs hold 2.66GB. The single layer capacity is equal to about 30 minutes of video while the dual layer discs hold about one hour of personal/family highlights. Read more

Shrinking Storage…Keeping Data Safe, Close At Hand

old computer In observance of the hard drive’s 50th anniversary, we cajoled our kids into visiting the computer museum in San Jose. Seemed like an interesting way to get them to understand the technology that has impregnated their lives.

We unplugged our son’s MP3 player white earbuds.
Made him leave his PSP at home.
Turned off our daughter’s cellphone…no IMing.

Other than the sheer size, they were totally unimpressed with the world’s first hard drive -- the IBM RAMAC (Random Access Memory for Accounting and Control) drive.

Our son reached into his pocket and pulled out his Verbatim 4GB USB flash drive and 8GB USB HD and asked, “So what did they do with the 5MB refrigerator?”

It’s tough to explain to a kid who knows everything that OSs and apps were smaller then.

After all, he vaguely recalls that photos were prints…videos were in the theater…phones were attached to the wall by wire…people wrote/mailed letters! Read more

Data Longevity on CD, DVD Media

CDIn the early ‘90s when the first CD-R disc was introduced manufacturers said the media had a data life in excess of 40 years. In the late 90s when the first DVDR discs appeared on the scene producers proclaimed a data life of at least 100 years. Throughout that time and even today the press will “discover” that the media is susceptible to CD or DVD rot that will eat your information – audio, video or data – in as little as two years after it is written.

Because CD and DVD media – in 2005 more than 10.65 billion CD-R discs and more than 3,454 million DVDR discs were made and sold -- is used to archive nearly everything today it does make you worry. Especially when these discs are the only place you have precious, irreplaceable family memories – photos and movies – as well as vital family, personal and company data/documents. Read more

Verbatim’s "Notebook Essentials" Kit is a Top Pick

Notebook users, trust me, you will want to check out this inexpensive little kit. Until now, a pain for me has been lugging around my notebook's accessories (along with the notebook itself) when traveling. Everywhere I go I seem to be missing something...a converter cord, decent speakers for a presentation, and yes, a mouse, as I really prefer mice to touch pads. I normally pack these items in plastic baggies and then in my suitcase. Takes up a lot of room!
