NBC TODAY: Beach and Pool - Live from the Club Med Sandpiper Resort
- Sunscreen is the number one item needed for any outdoor activity - use a minimum SPF Factor of 15 every time you go out in the sun
- Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million new cases diagnosed every year. It is estimated that 51,400 people in the United States will be diagnosed with melanoma, in 2001, a 9 percent increase from 2000.
Recommendations for effective sunscreen use from American Academy of Dermatologists:
- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
- Use sunscreens every day if you are going to be in the sun for more than 20 minutes.
- Apply sunscreens to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors.
- When applying sunscreen, pay particular attention to the face, ears, hands and arms, and generously coat the skin that is not covered by clothing.
- One ounce of sunscreen, enough to fill a shot glass, is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body completely. Reapply sunscreens every two hours or immediately after swimming or strenuous activity.
Designed to tell people when it's time to take action that will prevent sunburn. The Sun Pal is available in two formats: a small stick-on patch that is attached to exposed skin or clothing and a narrow band that can be worn on the wrist or ankle. Both patch and band are coated with compounds that gradually change color while exposed to outdoor UV rays, even on overcast days when over-exposure to UV is still a health threat. Sun Pal goes through two color changes. The first signals when it's time to apply more sunscreen; the second shows when the wearer's medically safe dose of UV has been reached for the day.
