Next iPhone to have 3.95-inch Upgraded Retina Display

 iPhone

According to recent reports, Apple's next-generation iPhone will feature an upgraded high-definition Retina display. Apparently Apple is still testing multiple potential designs for the next-generation iPhone, specifically evaluating several new iPhone models enclosed in locked shells, and at least one of these potential new iPhones includes an upgraded 640 x 1,136-pixel Retina display that measures 3.95 inches diagonally.

With an aspect ratio of close to 16:9, the new Retina display is said to be the same width as the current model but taller, and Apple is reportedly toying with adding a fifth row of icons to the home screen in a version of iOS 6 that could be exclusive to the new iPhone in order to take advantage of the new display real estate.

Beyond potentially posing issues for app developers, these reports are also contradictory to earlier stories stating that Apple has already placed orders with its suppliers for new display panels that will be included in the next iPhone. If Apple is still testing different displays, panel orders could not yet have been placed.Read more

Verizon Pumping Up for Summer

 Verizon Pumping Up for Summer

Verizon has recently given us a good glimpse of the smartphone landscape for late summer and early fall this year, staring the Samsung Galaxy S3. The lineup will include more than one Verizon flagship smartphone, and all of the details push Verizon way ahead of the pack in terms of offerings.

Beginning with the Samsung Galaxy S3, we know that it will definitely be offered by Big Red, we just don't know when. It's assumed by many industry analysts that Summer is the magic season for this stellar gadget to hit shelves.

And while we're on the subject of Android smartphones, there are several Motorola RAZR models due to hit Verizon in the coming months, one of which will most likely be the Motorola RAZR HD, with a larger and clearer display.

The full-steam vendor HTC ain't puttin' on the brakes either. They might actually be the star of the Android show this time around. It is being reported that HTC will have a major flagship device hitting Verizon shelves in the fall. It's said to feature a whopping 5-inch 1080p HD display, a new chipset that includes a quad-core Krait CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU, HTC Sense 5 and a Scribe pen. This sounds a lot like a competitor of Samsung's Galaxy Note.Read more

iPhone nano Entry-level Phone

 iPhone nano

Rumors surrounding Apple's next-generation iPhone handsets are flooding in as we approach the infamous October month, the period when Apple is assumed to announce a new product or two. The launch of an entry-level "iPhone nano" is one Apple product that has been most dominant in the media, and sources are reporting that the new low-cost iPhone is in the works this year.

Apple is looking to expand its position in the low-end smartphone market. As such, the company is planning to launch a new low-end model later this year, possibly at or around the same time the sixth-generation flagship iPhone hits the market. More likely is the possibility that Apple will retool a current iPhone model in an effort to cut costs, but we will see soon enough. It's also being rumored that Apple may also introduce an "iPad Mini" later this year. Exciting times are abound!Read more

Turn Your Ordinary Notebook into a Powerhouse

 Don’t Be Half a Man

A few weeks ago, I was helping my dad clean out his garage of old unwanted stuff – you know computers, components, printers, scanners, fax machines, magazines – and I got sidetracked leafing through some of the 20-plus year old issues of some great magazines and comics.

The ad above grabbed my attention because first it had Mac in the headline and that's one of my favorite computer makers.

It offered to turn an out-of-shape person into someone people could respect and admire without totally replacing him.

It kind of reminded me of the issues we and other third-party, system upgrade/enhancement producers have in helping consumers extend and expand the use life of their Mac/PC notebooks and ultrabooks.

Lots of people have systems that are only one to three years old, are perfectly good for their work, are paid for but are like Mac in the ad – they don't have the muscle of the new sleek faster, more powerful portables that are introduced.

Like the bully in the ad, the new systems make your system look scrawny.

It wouldn't take much for your laptop computer to "get into shape."Read more

Glimpses of Today, Tomorrow from the Past

 crystal ball

Did you ever wonder if we would make things better if we didn't have bad guys? How about keeping bad things from happening to good people? Or good people saying bad/dumb things?

Fortunately, none of those things are going to happen!

Way back in 1931, Aldous Huxley created a furor over the controlled world in his book "Brave New World." In 1949, George Orwell saw a similar world controlled by technology with "1984."

The two authors sent scholars and technologist back to the drawing board to analyze the possibilities and explain:

  • Why it couldn't happen
  • What to do to prevent it from happening
  • What happens if it happens

They continue to discuss the pros and cons of today's always plugged in, always on harm/good of today's instant ability to "hit the button and take down anyone" approach to leaving a company (Goldman Sachs, Google) with a bang.

Unless you're like us and really like the insanely brilliant ads, you probably don't waste much of your precious time wondering if Steve Jobs and Chiat-Day's Lee Clow and Steve Hayden could really see the future or were just playing on our insecurities, our fears. Read more

13 and 15-inch MacBook Air Pros in the Works

 MacBook Air

Recently, multiple reports have suggested that Apple is working with suppliers and manufacturing partners to develop a new 15-inch MacBook Air. Some confirmation of these reports have occurred, and it now looks as though the rumored slim 15-inch laptop is part of a redesigned MacBook line that will also include a 13-inch model.

DigiTimes recently reported that new thinner MacBook Pro laptops have entered production and shipments could begin as soon as this month. Number of units manufactured is expected to initially fall between 100,000 and 150,000 units, but will soon climb to 900,000 units. Most of the details are unknown, but we do know that the new line will have a thinner case. Additionally, launch date is unknown, but rumors are suggesting April. Will keep you posted on additional information when it becomes available.Read more

SURVEY: iPad 2 is the Second Most Popular Tablet for First-Time Buyers

 Apple iPad 3

There will always be a deluge of people who immediately buy the latest and greatest from Apple. In fact, dealnews conducted a reader survey and discovered that 55% of current iPad owners said they would update to the third generation — even though it's only been a year since the second generation was released, and just two years since the first generation.

But what about consumers who are currently tablet-free and finally ready to jump aboard the slate train? The still-beating iPad 2 is now priced to sell at $399 retail, and we've already seen a deal spring up for $360, making it an extremely enticing option. There are also quite a few Android tablets making waves after CES. So how many of said tablet-less consumers will still opt for the new iPad?

Well, according to the survey, a whopping 78% of non-tablet owners who are planning on buying their first device within the next year said they'll spring for the newest offering from Apple. And, of the people who aren't buying the new iPad (the remaining 22%), almost half will buy a previous generation — specifically, 60% plan on buying the iPad 2 within the next six months. Why? Because the iPad 2 is now cheaper.Read more
