The Changing Mix of Business Leadership

 The Iron Lady

"Power is like being a lady... if you have to tell people you are, you aren't."Margaret Thatcher, "The Iron Lady," Pathe International (2011)

A year ago, we were late in leaving for the office and noticed a lot of fathers were escorting their kids to the grade school.

Last week, it seemed as though the numbers hadn't changed much.

With the business community being cautiously optimistic, it made us wonder if we'll ever get back to the point where mom stays home handling the myriad of family/household activities and dad returns to the grind.

During the recession, men accounted for more than 71 percent of the job losses.

The latest unemployment figures stand at 9.8 percent for men 20 or over and 8 percent for their female counterparts, with women making up 47 percent of the total labor force.

Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute, said that their studies indicate that the man of the house isn't finding a job as quickly as he hoped and if/when he does, it is for a lower salary.

"Work isn't working very well for men," she noted.

In addition to having more women in the workforce worldwide, we're seeing a growing number of high-profile women running and influencing companies as well as very active mentoring organizations such as Women 2.0.Read more

The Usual Suspects, a Few Surprises, the New Frontier

 NAB 2011 Show Floor

At the U.S.'s premium broadcast event, you'd expect the usual array of "interested parties" to attend … and they have.

Senior folks from Microsoft, Apple, Google, Netflix, Facebook, Zynga, EA, Hulu, Roku, Verizon, AT&T, Akamai, Level 3, Intel, AMD and Nvidia; you name it, they were there.

Last year, DreamWorks' Jeff Katzenberg beat the drum for 3D and the studios and a few network operations (ESPN, Discovery) listened and delivered.

This year, tech tinkerer, filmmaking powerhouse James Cameron made an even stronger case for everyone, everything, everywhere to practice 3D production, distribution and viewing.

Cameron prodded the broadcast industry to get onboard or get left behind by the new distribution channels/opportunities. Read more

Game Developer's Conference: Day 2

 Panasonic 3DTV

The bad thing about events in Northern California is that there are always a number of them going on in the tech industry and usually they have a knack to overlap.

Take today.

Yes GDC is still on but then down in San Jose is a two-day OTTCon (over the top conference) taking place. No biggie you say but these are the guys/gals who are going give us a hint on what we'll be watching, where we'll be watching it, how we'll be watching it.

Affects the way you work with games too!

OTTCon Snapshot

These folks have a huge challenge ahead of them. They're busting each other's chops trying to figure out exactly what tomorrow's TV entertainment is going to be like especially since people seem to want to push it to every screen you have (and even will be thinking about).

That's not so bad but they're really trying to figure out how they're going to get their money out of it! And how does it fit into/compete in the YouTube online spectrum? It does!

They were an energetic crowd but the first thing you realize is that they don't have any better idea where TV is going than you do…but they say it with confidence/conviction so it "feels" so!Read more
