Apple Reveals the New iPad

 The New iPad

As expected, Apple unveiled its latest iPad on Wednesday at a live event in San Francisco.

Called "the new iPad" (rather than the iPad 3), it sports a Retina Display with 2048 x 1536 screen resolution and 3.1 million pixels, a new A5X processor with quad-core graphics, voice dictation and a 5-megapixel iSight camera capable of capturing 1080p HD video.

The new iPad measures in at 9.4 mm thin and weighs 1.4 pounds. A Wi-Fi model will be available along with a Wi-Fi + 4G model offering 4G LTE connectivity on both AT&T's and Verizon's 4G LTE networks. This is the first iOS device to offer that technology. The new iPad can also be a personal hotspot (if carriers support it), and is said to deliver the same 10 hour battery life as its predecessor.

The new iPad will be offered in two colors – black or white – and will be available on March 16, 2012, with pre-orders taking place now. Pricing on the Wi-Fi model is $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 32GB model and $699 for the 64GB model.

iPad Wi-Fi + 4G for either AT&T or Verizon will be available for $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB model and $829 for the 64GB model.

Apple iPad 3 Event Scheduled for March 7th

 Apple iPad

Apple is sending out invitations to an event that will be held on March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. The invite has the line "We have something you really have to see. And touch." Behind that message appears to be an image of an iPad 3.

Looking at the image closely, it appears that the new iPad will have a retina display as expected. What is also curious about this image is that there appears to be no home button. The idea of no button on the iPhone or iPad rumor started up the year that multi-touch gestures arrived. Some expected that the home button would be dropped in favor of the 4/5 finger pinch, which essentially does the same as a single push of the home button. A double tap is replaced by sliding 4 fingers up the screen. Of course, we might be just looking at an iPad in landscape mode, or on one of the edges, but we think that Apple could be headed in the direction of getting rid of that home button.Read more

2012 CES Predictions

 CES logo

Another year, another CES. The huge consumer electronics extravaganza in Las Vegas that officially opens on January 10th looks to be a major showcase for tablets, TVs and connectivity this year. The 55-inch LG OLED TV is already getting a lot of buzz even though it's rumored $8,000 price tag will keep it in the fantasy realm for most consumers. We predict this will be the most photographed and talked about product at the show.

Android Tablets Will Make Another Run At the iPad

Tablets This time last year Google was just about ready to ship its tablet-friendly version of Android called Honeycomb but even that didn't seem to help Android make a dent in Apple's iPad business. This year we have another version of Android called Ice Cream Sandwich which may or may not help the mainstream tablet vendors like Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and others attract buyers to their tablets. At the moment it looks like the two dominant tablet makers; Apple and Amazon won't even be exhibiting at CES. We also think we'll see tablets featured at a lot of booths as accessories to TVs and controllers for smart home technology. The word is we'll see close to 100 new tablets on display at this year's CES including some quad-core, Tegra 3, Kal-El-powered versions like Acer's Iconia Tab A700. Samsung's 5.3-inch Note, which represents a new size for tablets should be getting a lot of attention along with some tablets that might be running Microsoft's Windows 8.Read more

Will HDTV Manufacturers March to Irrelevance at CES 2012?

Sony Internet TV with Android Market

This year's CES should bring out the latest HDTV sets from all the big names including Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and more. We expect to see more connected TVs with more iPads and other tablets controlling them. A challenge they will all be facing is how to make their TVs stand out from the pack. With little differentiation between one, high refresh rate, LED backlit big screen HDTV set, and another, TV manufacturers are going to have to differentiate in order to make their TVs more appealing than others. One differentiation we may see is added TV "smarts" either built into the TV itself or provided in a companion device like a tablet. TVs with more smarts will help but with rumors of an Apple TV coming in 2012, we wonder if any of the major TV brands will be able to compete with Apple in the battle for the living room.

TV Brands Used to Be Enough of a Differentiator
Unfortunately, throwing pixels on a screen is not enough to sustain a TV manufacturer's market share. HDTVs like laptop computers are becoming something of a commodity; there is little to differentiate one brand from another. Even Sony who has been able to command a price premium in the past now has TVs that are priced similarly to Vizio TVs. Of course there will always be new technology advances like Ultra High Definition (UHDTV), quantum dots, and big screen AMOLED TVs but these won't come for some time and once one vendor gets one of these features, they all will.Read more

Apple iTV Preview (video)

 Apple iTV

Steve Jobs biography, which debuted last week, quoted the computer industry's icon as saying, "I've finally cracked it." He was, of course, talking about Apple TV, and this one quote has once again started the enormous rumor mill regarding the prospect of Apple revolutionizing one more media medium....the television.

A Flickr user has created a mock-up of what Apple could be envisioning, and it ain't too shabby. Nor could it be too off the mark with what we know about Apple's current technology installations with the iPad and iPhone.

So far, the name of the actual Apple TV has waffled from "iTV" to "Apple TV"......and back to "iTV." We're pretty sure that, with the acquisition of SIRI and its integration with the new iPhone 4S, iTV will use this evolving technology as its primary input and channel navigation tool. It's also speculated that iTV will be a 3D device, sporting iCloud/AirPlay, HD FaceTime, a multitouch screen, and have the capability of running apps.

If any of these predictions are true, we could be looking at a giant iPhone.....television style. In terms of its physical appearance, Apple is going more towards getting rid of the bezel, so maybe expect and edge-to-edge screen going forward.

Several industry experts are predicting that you'll be able to use any of the iOS devices as the remote control for Apple iTV, via an iTV remote control app, complete with TV listings on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.Read more

More Content Than Your Mind Can Hold

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest." Mr. Turkentine, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), Wolper Pictures Ltd.

We're not certain what the preoccupation is with TV, but firms beyond the old-fashioned content developers, producers, "shippers" have gone out of their way to say they have the solution you need/want!

First, there was the bi-annual IFA conference in Berlin. All of the consumer electronics folks gathered to spin their TV, video, whatever stories and show their wares.

That was followed by IBC in Amsterdam. There, the worldwide broadcast industry gathered to figure out how they were going to survive and make money with the growing demand for online video and audio content.Read more
