Xbox 720 Most Likely to Be 3D

 Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft is in the works to hopefully be bringing 3D features to future generations of Xbox. Its future predecessor, perhaps named "Xbox 720", is rumored to be significantly more powerful; will support more impressive graphics and it may focus as much on other forms of home entertainment as it does on gaming. Microsoft has also hinted at a 3D component, considering a new job listing suggests the company is still hard at work to make enhanced 3D Xbox gaming a reality.

The posting is for a "Algorithm Research & Development Engineer for XBOX team" role in Haifa, Israel. Working with Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business unit, the Algorithm Research & Development Engineer will be responsible for a number of duties, including "algorithm design and implementation into state of the art 3D imaging systems working in an integrated HW and SW leading team, working closely with peers in Redmond, and being part of a fast moving and growing development team."

While the job posting is a bit vague, the description clearly indicates that Microsoft is taking 3D seriously. 3D gaming is growing in popularity thanks to the advent of more capable 3D HDTVs, but the video game industry is way behind in creating software and content that is optimized for 3D.Read more

The Game Is On

 Shoot ‘Em Up (2007)

"The leader who stays in the rear, takes it in the rear. Besides, violence is one of the most fun things to watch."Mr. Hertz, Shoot 'Em Up (2007), New Line Cinema

A friend just had his PayPal account (hence his AmEx account) tapped for $50.

His son had bought a big bunch of virtual gold on a Zynga game he was playing.

$50 for something that doesn't exist?

OMG, someone really can sell the Brooklyn Bridge!

The game industry has come a long way since our Atari days. Now it's approaching a $1B industry!

Sony, MS and Nintendo still fight it out for leadership in the number of devices, but the real profit makers are the social and mobile games.

Why would millions of people buy something as meaningless as Raging Birds? Read more

3D TV is Coming, There's No Stopping It Now

 Godzilla (1954)

"… Politicians from around the world will see it. Of course, they'll want to use it as a weapon. As a scientist - no, as a human being - I can't allow that to happen!" Dr. Seizawa, Godzilla (1954), Toho Films

After attending so many CES (Consumer Electronics Show) events, you'd think we'd resist being swept away by the buzz. Sure, after last year's show, all we saw was 3D. "They" swore all the pieces were in place. And we believed it.

Realistically…we knew better.

We're still as optimistic and enthusiastic about the long-term success of 3D TV as we were before; but this time, we're going to be a little cautious. We're taking the advice of that great U.S. President -- George W. Bush -- who stated so profoundly, "fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me...you can't get fooled again."

Ah well…you get the idea.

The motion picture industry is really all over 3D. Some good, like Avatar and Megamind. Some a real waste of time, money – theirs and ours – like Clash of the Titans 2010, Saw 3D or Jackass 3D, Piranha. Last year, Hollywood put out 25 3D movies. This year, they expect to double that number. Read more

Call of Duty: Black Ops to Support 3D

Call of Duty: Black Ops screenshot

Call of Duty fans, you're going to like this (that is, if you have a 3DTV or 3D PC). It was just announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops will be playable in stereoscopic 3D when the game is released on November 9th.

The game will be compatible with 3D-ready HDTVs and 3D PCs using active shutter 3D glasses. Call of Duty: Black Ops will be playable in both 3D and non-3D on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.

"Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops. Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experiences you will have in 3D with Black Ops," says Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch.
