Dual Screen Alex eReader Ships

Spring Design announced this week that they are now shipping the dual screen Alex eReader, available online at www.springdesign.com.

The Android-based Alex eReader supports eBooks in EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats. It also offers Internet browsing using WiFi connectivity, and later this year will also feature 3G and EVDO/CDMA connectivity.

A unique feature to Alex is the ability to multitask – you can listen to music while you read, supplement your eBook on the EPD screen with video on the LCD screen, search the Web or use email.

The Alex eReader comes with headphones, AC connector, USB cable, protective cover and supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB. It is now available for $399. Multi-language versions of Alex will soon be announced for countries speaking Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Korean and Hebrew.

January 5, 2010 - Spring Design, developers of the dual screen multimedia Alex eReader, today announced they have entered into an agreement with Google that gives Alex users access to more than one million Google Books online or downloaded using Alex's integrated Android Web browser and search applications.

Alex is the first and only open Google Android-based eReader platform with full featured Internet browsing, WiFi connectivity, audio and video playback and image viewing in popular formats, and the ability to run a growing number of Google Android applications. Read more

First Android E-Reader Announced

Spring Design just announced Alex, the first e-reader based on Google Android. Not only is Alex an e-reader, you can browse the Internet over Wi-Fi or mobile networks such as 3G, EVDO/CDMA and GSM.

Featuring dual screens, the first screen is a 6" E-Ink EPD display for reading e-books and the second is a 3.5" color LCD screen used to support Internet content from the text on the main screen. You can also capture web content from the LCD screen, and toggle to view it on the EPD screen. Browser features such as bookmarking, history, and security settings are built into the device.
