Storage is All About Performance ... Plus

 Flashdance

"When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to afford to eat in restaurants like this." Nick, "Flashdance," Paramount (1983)

This year, the industry will ship more than $25 billion worth of servers and more than 800 million smart devices (desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets and smartphones). But only the big iron and IT folks care much about the servers.

If you listen to HP's Apotheker and Wall Streeters, there's no reason to care about laptops, less about desktops. Leo is washing his hands of the messy business. But when it comes to tablets and phones, everyone wants to take center stage so people can do their social media stuff, mobile transactions and digital content creation/consumption.

Tablets are projected to enjoy a 123+ percent compound annual growth rate from this year's 31 million iPad and "other" units.

Next year, it's estimated that about one billion smartphones will be sold worldwide (more than 4 billion phones overall).

But in 2014, 291 million notebooks (52% of the computing market) will be sold with China leading the demand curve.

All those devices "you can't live without" let folks create, produce and replicate a whopping 1.8 Zettabytes (1.8 trillion Gigabytes) of content.

Store it…Somewhere
Of course, it's all for nothing without the lowly stagehand…storage.

The way we're using our devices – computers, laptops, smartphones -- content volumes will grow by a factor of nine in the next five years.Read more

Meridian Media Drive 600 - a Sooloos Digital Media Storage Solution

 Meridian Media Drive 600

Meridian this week unveiled Media Drive 600, a new dedicated system storage solution that can be used one of two ways - to upgrade storage in an existing Meridian Sooloos Digital Media System or as a component when building a new system.

Media Drive 600 includes a pair of front-loading drive bays configured with automatic RAID 1 backup so that your media library is always safely mirrored on a second HDD. The system offers Meridian Sooloos Digital Media System storage for up to 5000 CD albums in lossless quality FLAC format and is always connected to the Sooloos extranet, which means it can be remotely accessed for support and diagnostics services.

Media Drive 600 can be networked to any other Meridian Sooloos product, adding extra storage that is integrated with existing libraries. It has a simple front panel interface with six LEDs for feedback on system status, and features front-loading drive bays so that the unit can be serviced without having to access the rear of the rack or to remove the Media Drive 600.Read more

New SanDisk Memory Vault Protects Your Pics for 100 Years

 SanDisk Memory Vault

Where do you store all of your digital photos? While an external hard drive is a good solution for photo and video back-up, SanDisk's new Memory Vault may be a better one, promising to preserve images in their original quality for up to 100 years.

The SanDisk Memory Vault delivers 100 years of reliability by utilizing the company's Chronolock technology, which "incorporates the key elements of advanced solid-state storage to create a proprietary memory management solution." SanDisk says that they "conducted accelerated temperature cycling tests that simulated the effects of data retention over long periods of time." Unless we live to be 120+, we'll just have to take their word on it.

The device connects to your computer's USB port so you can easily drag-and-drop your photo/video files and features a ruggedized, yet sleek, metallic design. The SanDisk Memory Vault comes in two storage capacities – and 8GB and 16GB, which SanDisk says is enough space for thousands of photos and hours of HD video. Personally, I would have to own two of the 16GB devices to hold all my photos and videos. Maybe they'll see this need and come out with a larger capacity unit in the future. One can hope anyway.

The SanDisk Memory Vault is available now for $49.99 for the 8GB model and $89.99 for the 16GB Memory Vault.

Swimming in Data: The Challenge is Staying Afloat

 The Hunt for Red October

"A $40 million computer tells you you're chasing an earthquake, but you don't believe." – Capt Mancuso, "The Hunt for Red October," Paramount Pictures (1990)

One of the toughest jobs in any country, any company is gathering, hoarding, protecting information that may give them an edge against "them."

And we must be doing a helluva' job because organizations and individuals are accumulating data and meta data at an ever-increasing rate.

The sheer volume that's coming at us is causing us to experience information overload…emails to answer, virtual friends to contact, YouTube videos to watch, games to play, movies to sneak, reports to read/digest, stuff you have to find/do in the virtual world…just in case.Read more

 Thank You for Smoking, 2005

"Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. 'Thank God we invented the... you know, whatever device.'"Jeff Megall, Thank You for Smoking, 2005, 20th Century Fox

Ours is a typical American/Silicon Valley family – two early adopters, two chasm straddlers.

Our inventory includes -- four notebooks, three smartphones/one feature phone, one iPad, two looking, three 500GB external HDs, 2TB home storage, various other PC/CE devices.

The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project reinforced the fact we can be home now and then and that it's not just the new, hot, sexy on-the-go gadgets.

Smartphones, tablets (O.K., iPads) are on everyone's gotta' have list; but they aren't the Alpha-Omega for folks.

Nope. If you're a typical alpha male or female, you have an array of gadgets and a gotta' get list for the rest.Read more

Storage: Worry About It the Day After Tomorrow

 The Day After Tomorrow, 2004

"I am president of the Electronics Club, the Math Club, and the Chess Club. Now if there's a bigger nerd in here, please... point him out." Brian Parks (The Day After Tomorrow, 2004) 20th Century Fox

Attend CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January and you'll have lots of fun. People are excited, exhilarated even. But the things they're showing aren't even good paperweights without all the great storage advances. That's why we went to the Flash Memory Summit – a little bit of fun, tons of optimism. Then, there's DISKCON – the hard drive show – techie…fact-filled…that's about it.

Terry Rapson summed it up, "Oh, you know what these scientific gatherings are. All dancing girls, wine and parties."

No one stands in long lines late into the night when a new flash or hard drive hits the store, but they're having a tough time producing enough to keep pace with what we're doing with our personal/business things.

The only exciting day was back in 1956 when IBM shipped the 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) storage solution. Read more
