Nike+ FuelBand Preview

 Nike+ FuelBand

Nike has announced the Nike+ FuelBand. The bracelet is similar to others you may have seen before which includes the Jawbone UP. Nike has a slightly different approach with this device and uses a calorie counter on a display. The device connects via Bluetooth to an iPhone or can be synced by USB and can be monitored online so that you can set goals and track those goals.

The +FuelBand is much in the vain of the original Nike+ SportBand, except boasts a more attractive 20 LED dot-matrix display and can measure activity in a new unit the company calls NikeFuel. That latter bit is a normalized score that, unlike calories, awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup.

The system uses an interesting method of telling you how you are progressing through the day. If you are not moving enough then the band lets you know with a series of lights. If they burn green then all is well, likewise if they drop to red then you need to get more active. On the technical side, the band tracks activity by what it calls Oxygen Kinetics, which looks at a mixture of signals to give an accurate reading of activity.Read more

Rock Solid Feelings from HEAD

 HEAD YouTek Speed Pro racquet

The game of tennis has matured with technology, and the companies that embrace technology will be in front of the competition. HEAD is a step ahead of their competitors, and d3o is their secret weapon. The technology behind d3o will change all of our lives for the better in many different products. I am amazed that HEAD was able to identify with this material to deliver performance enhancements to the user.

The d3o smart material is a specially designed molecule structure that reacts to impact. Where a d3o form can be pliable and soft when held, and become hard like plastic when impact occurs. I have seen the material in ski/snowboarding headgear. It was a soft pliable head warmer that would become a hard helmet when hit. This is a really cool material that has benefits to many industries. HEAD Sport AG has some smart engineers who put the d3o material inside their racquets.

HEAD calls the marriage of their products with d3o, YouTek. The tagline is, "Technology Goes Personal." They mean it…here is why… Tennis players from many skill levels from the amateur to the professional will identify improvements in their game. I say this because players with a short compact swing speed can maximize power in their swing with YouTek. The professional will identify immediately that their racquet adapts to their style of play. YouTek adapts to every player because of d3o. Read more

Get Your Game On(line) this March

 NCAA March Madness

March Madness 2009 is here. Selection Sunday was March 15 and the Final Four begins April 4 in Detroit. Not everyone lives in Detroit so here are a few of options for enjoying the games from a bit more of a distance. Other than television, which isn't really a great travel companion, the Internet again strikes as a force to be reckoned with in viewing these near four weeks of college clash.

For the viewing pleasure of anyone with a computer, the main sites, including CBS Sports, and the NCAA both provide free online playing options. Like 2008, the demand video player will use a wide screen format and provide a live scoreboard. There will be a live halftime show for the online crowd, and the option to view multiple games at once.

This year is particularly unique in that CBS has again dropped the need for other sites to register in order to use its on-demand player. This year over 200 sites will have access to streaming the game as well. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports, Joost, and even Facebook will all also be able to stream the tournament live through links, which gives more options to the rest of us.Read more
