How to Make the Most of Twitter

 Twitter logo

Everybody's talking about Twitter now - Oprah, Ashton, Obama - so it seems the 140 character social media phenomenon is here to stay. In response to the hype, over 100 various applications and widgets for Twitter have been developed, so our attempt here is to introduce some of the best.

As Esther Schindler wrote in her earlier article on Twitter, "Twitter is like hanging out in a very cool restaurant that's frequented by interesting people." Twitter can be a great tool for news junkies, media hounds, bloggers and anyone who just wants to keep tabs on what's going on in the world. However, trolling through the sea of feeds can be tricky, so the first thing to master is Twitter Search. Read more

How Much More Connected Can You Afford to Be?

 Sleepless in Seattle

"Well, I'm gonna' get out of bed every morning... breath in and out all day long. Then, after a while I won't have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out." – Sam Baldwin, Sleepless in Seattle (Tristar – 1993)

Hopping out of bed, checking voicemail, checking our email, checking a few gotta' see Web sites, having a cup of coffee is the fairly typical start of most people's day around the globe, around the calendar.

Two billion plus computers, four billion plus plus mobile devices, a gazillion (and growing) Web sites, blogs, social nets and instant in-touch services have shrunk the world--and the clock--to fit nicely in our screen(s). Read more

Leap of Faith or Trust in The Cloud?

 Cloud Computing

By Jeff Zbar
www.homeofficehighway.com

Call it a leap of faith.

Every time my family travels on Home Office Highway, I load up a flash drive with documents, files and notes for stories and columns in progress.

This year, except for a flash-drive built into a card reader for my camera, I brought no portable drive.

All my documents, files and notes were / are stored in the Cloud. Notes for my columns, interviews for pending stories, even all the notes related to our destinations, RV parks and other trip details were stored either to Google Notes, Gmail or Google Docs.Read more

He’s Just Not That In To You screenshot

"He MySpaced me." – Mary – He's Just Not That In To You (2009)

Not long ago we read that back in the late 1800s when electricity was first demonstrated people fell to their knees in amazement. The individuals who demonstrated it probably felt omnipotent. No one questioned or challenged them. Today you've got to do something really spectacular to get more than a few lines in someone's blog.

Technology permeates everything today. It is an integral part of almost every movie. Even girlie girl movies (we go to keep peace in the household)! Tech toys have become integral parts of our homes/offices. They're indispensable. Our kids feel lost if they don't have them…all. Read more

Social Media: The Hunted Can Become the Hunter

 Social Media logos

The world of new media – widgets and social applications – looks like a beautiful marketing communications hunting ground. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Imagine people flock to Web 2.0 locations where they blog. They upload/download audios/videos of specific interest to them. They congregate at business/special interest web sites to gain information and be entertained. They twitter. They gather daily/nightly in online communities to exchange information, news and just hang out. Read more

Sprint Increases its Social Network Connections with Customers

 Samsung Exclaim

The new Samsung Exclaim and HTC Snap make it easier than ever for customers to use social networks of their choice.

As part of the company's focus on a great customer experience, Sprint has expanded its social networking presence to meet and interact with customers where they are in order to provide direct and timely responses to their inquiries; this reminds me of my various issues with Comcast – it actually helps a lot. Customers can receive Sprint updates on Twitter via @Sprint or @SprintGreenNews for specific company-wide green initiatives. You can even become a fan of Sprint on the company's Facebook page, or check out Sprint's Flickr and BuzzAboutWireless sites.

Samsung Exclaim: The Samsung Exclaim features a messaging-centric form factor in two great colors – Blueberry and Raspberry. The device's dual-slider design hides both a numeric keypad and a full QWERTY keyboard. Exclaim is focused on social networking, with new interactive Facebook and MySpace tiles right on the home screen as part of Sprint's award-winning One Click customizable user interface. Customers can now add Twitter to their home screen using One Click as well. Read more

quirky – a Social Network for Product Ideas

 quirky screenshot

Have you ever had a brilliant idea for a new product, but didn't know where to go or what to do with your idea? Ben Kaufman, the 22-year-old who founded mophie and kluster, just created quirky.com, a new site that helps you create your product...everything from design, naming, manufacturing, marketing and sales.

Here is how it works: you can submit your product idea for $99, or, if you just want to see what everyone's ideas are, you can go onto quirky.com to vote and rate other people's ideas. Every week new ideas will be posted on quirky to be rated. The products will have a 7 day evaluation period, then, one product from the pool of ideas will move forward through the process. That's when the quirky community starts helping the product developer with everything from naming the product, logo selection etc.

The final product is then pre-sold at the quirky online store. Once there are enough committed buyers, the product goes into full production. And get this - 30¢ of every dollar generated from the sale of a quirky product goes back to the consumers who influenced the product ideas. Pretty cool, huh?

For more information, and to see the first product being launched - the Sling Back - visit www.quirky.com.
