Price Impact: OLED TVs versus LED-backlit LCDs

 LG 55-inch OLED TV

It's a well-known fact that new technology ushers in a barrage of deals on the previous-generation tech it replaces. We've seen that occur with processors, smartphones, laptops, and even tablets. But this year the stakes are higher as the TV industry braces itself for one of the biggest debuts we've seen since the introduction of high definition.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, both LG and Samsung showcased their next-generation OLED HDTVs. As CNET succinctly puts it, OLED has the potential to be the best TV technology ever. And as the waiting game begins for the first big-screen OLED HDTV to hit the U.S. market (CNET estimates LG's 55" 55EM9600 will debut first in Q3), we can't help but wonder how OLED will affect prices of other TVs, specifically LED-based LCDs.Read more

Best and Worst Things to Buy in February

 shopping online

The short month of February is here, and just because it's a mere 29 days long doesn't mean it's any less chock full of deals. Check out the list of the best and worst things to buy in February, which the dealnews editors compiled after poring over their extensive archives of sales, coupons, and individual products from years past. If you're curious about Presidents' Day sales, gifts for Valentine's Day, or prices on electronics, outerwear, and more, then read on.

Valentine's Day Deals Are Predictably Not Great
Since this is the time of year in which jewelry, flowers, and perfume are in their highest in demand, it shouldn't surprise anyone that you probably won't get the best price possible on these items; perfumes, for example, generally see better discounts in late February after Valentine's Day and March. That's because there's less incentive for retailers to offer truly great deals on these items when they're selling so well due to circumstance. Try buying your sweetheart a less routine Valentine's Day gift in a category that's more likely to see a fair discount.Read more

What You'll Pay for a Super Bowl HDTV Upgrade

 Mitsubishi 3DTV

Since the Super Bowl is upon us, and we recently viewed a parade of new HDTVs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), we decided it was a good time to take a look at what kind of deals a tech enthusiast/sports fan can expect to find on modern-day HDTVs.

With a focus on screen sizes, the editors over at dealnews have combed through every HDTV deal posted in the past year to find the best discounts. Here is what they found:

42-inch 1080p LCD
Although we saw a 42" set go for as low as $189 over the holidays, it's still not common to find a 42" HDTV set that cheap. Instead, we recommend keeping your eyes peeled for models at $349 or lower, which is still an unbelievably low price for these TVs.

46-inch 1080p LCD
Third-tier 46" LCD HDTVs have been hovering in the $400 price range since May 2011. If you see a deal at $450 or below, we suggest going for it. As far as brand name TVs, anything below $575 would offer the most savings.Read more

Thinner and Smarter TVs

Best Time to Buy: Products released this CES could be 33% to 50% cheaper come October, and will likely see their lowest price point of the year around CES 2013.

Ultrabooks

Best Time to Buy: Wait until this summer or Black Friday (surprise, surprise!) to get the best prices of the year. Samsung Reveals its 55-inch Super OLED TV with Voice Control at CES 2012

 Samsung Super OLED TV

Samsung unveiled a breathtaking 55-inch Super OLED TV this week at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Available later this year, the OLED TV will be produced from a single pane of glass and it's Samsung's Super OLED technology that gives this bad boy the ultimate picture quality and its super-skinny size.

The Super OLED TV features true-to-life picture quality in both 2D and 3D with "significantly improved color accuracy compared to conventional LED TVs." In addition, Samsung Super OLED offers faster response times than LED, practically eliminating motion blur even in the fastest-moving scenes.

Samsung's Super OLED TV also features the company's new Smart Interaction technology, which allows you to use Voice Control, Motion Control and Face Recognition features to turn the TV on or off, adjust the volume or activate selected apps through speech. You can also use your voice to search in the web browser and "tell" the TV what you're searching for. Read more
