Holiday Travel Tips for Your Pet

 dog in suitcase

Will you be traveling with your pet this holiday season? Before you hit the road, check out these tips from PetAlive. There are even some helpful tips for boarding your pet, in the event your furry family member can't travel with you.

Tips for traveling with your pet:

  • Consider your pet's needs. Distance, location, temperature, mode of travel, your pet's health, age, etc. are all important factors to consider before traveling. Remember that your pet is very sensitive to change, and when stressed, the immune system is likely to become weakened, so be sure to boost immunity prior to travel.
  • Packing & preparation. Remember the essentials like medications and medical records, food and bowls, a pet first aid kit, bedding, carrier, tags, and toys.
  • Before any trip, make a quick stop at your vet to have your pet examined to make sure vaccinations are up to date, and to get any medications your pet might need, etc.
  • Relaxing your pet. Anxiety and car sickness are two of the most common concerns amongst pet owners. For anxiety, take your pet on short trips regularly to help accustom him to traveling, and remember to bring a favorite toy or blanket. If traveling by car, make sure the vehicle is well-ventilated, and open a window if necessary.

Protect Your Pet with PupLight

 PupLight

The holiday season is a busy time for shopping, wrapping gifts and entertaining guests. And if that's not enough, if your house is anything like mine you have kids running in and out constantly. During this busy time, don't forget about another member of your family – your pet.

The American Veterinarian Hospital Association notes that during the months of October, November and December, the danger of being hit by a motor vehicle rises for fido. Help reduce injuries to your dog with the PupLight.

PupLight is a rugged, water-resistant collar which features three ultra-bright, white, wide-angle, LED beams of light that shine several yards ahead, and allows your dog to be visible to others up to a mile away. The collar has an adjustable band and easily slips over the dog's head or snaps on. The light can also be attached to an existing collar or harness, and is adjustable, so you don't have to worry about it shining in your pets eyes (or your own). It runs on AAA batteries. Other than its safety benefits, PupLight makes it easier to find your dog when outside after dark. It also helps scare off wild animals such as coyotes, and assists older dogs with failing vision. Protect Pets from Cable and Wire Hazards

 Dog chewing

Protecting computer, home entertainment and other cables and wires around the home from your dog or cat is important for the devices, but most importantly, your pet. There are many inexpensive tools that will prevent pets from chewing on wires and playing with cables.

Here are some tips to keep dogs and cats cable and wire safe:

- There are numerous products on the market today for covering household wires to keep your pet - and even small children - from chewing on them. An extremely inexpensive and convenient product to protect your wires is the split wire loom - flexible and durable plastic tubing with a slit down the side allowing for easy insertion of a cable bundle.

- You can also cover any wires that are accessible to your small pet with spiral cable wrap – plastic wrap that keeps wires tightly bundled and also protects them from being chewed on by pets. Spiral cable wrap is also available in many colors to match a room’s décor. Read more

Futuristic Locator Device for Children from BrickHouse

 BrickHouse Child Locator

I was skeptical at first, and did not think this device was practical – I was wrong! The Brickhouse Child Locator provides a level of confidence when you find yourself out with children in public places. We live in different times, and protecting the children in our lives is a priority. The BrickHouse Child Locator was created to help parents maintain their children's safety. The device not only helps you directionally locate your child, but it sends a warning if your child wanders too far from the device. It also works well for pets!

Parents know children can disappear quickly. They are curious, and innocent which is a combination for exploration in their world. We take our kids everywhere, professional football games, amusement parks, camping, street festivals, and more. The kids wander and in seconds they are out of sight. The BrickHouse Child Locator is to be used as an aid, and not a replacement for parental supervision.

The feature I like the most is the "alert" with vibration alarms which beeps to warn you that a child has wandered off too far. Inside, the BrickHouse Child Locator device has a range of 250 feet, and outdoors it has a range of 600 feet. My wife and I had a great time playing hide-and-go-seek with our boys, and this device took our game to another level. Read more

Review: FURminator deShedding Tool

FURminator deShedding Tool used on a Husky

I bought my first FURminator at my vet's office a few months ago. The receptionist from whom I bought it said that she had not had any experience with it herself, but because it was being sold at a veterinary office, I took a chance and bought it anyway. I tried it out on my long haired German Shepherd Collie mix that night. Wow! It actually works! It works much, much better than any of the other shedding tools we have bought over the years. In fact, I never used any of the other tools very often because they did not seem to have much effect. The FURminator does. I was amazed at how much hair it removed.

My first FURminator has a single row of teeth. Recently I obtained what I call the Furminator II because it has two rows of teeth (the actual name is the FURminator Double Edge deShedding Tool). The one with two rows works a little faster than the single row version and is a little more expensive. The Furminator II does require the user to remove hair buildup from between the two rows of teeth a little more often than the single row version. I feel confident that either version will work much better than any other shedding tool you are likely to find. I heartily recommend the FURminator. It is effective and it's fun.Read more
