Mobile Phones, Everything Including Calls

 Motorola DynaTAC 8000X
You can forgive the news reporter who mistook President Obama’s Shaka wave for a sign to call him during the inauguration. The connected candidate -- who took communications to a whole new level -- would have expected a text message or email…not a call. Doubt if his new phone number is in the phone book anyway!

Mobile phones have come a long way since Motorola’s Cooper showed off his analogue brick back in 1973. Since then they’ve gotten smaller, cheaper, cuter and more a part of your personal identity…just ask the kids.

They:

  • take photos
  • check email
  • watch videos
  • browse the web
  • use GPS (like they get lost between home, school)
  • download stuff
  • listen to music
  • take videos
  • download ringtones, screensavers
  • play games
  • text, IM
  • make calls…tons and tons of calls

But to us they’re still phones. Read more

Motorola Introduces Rechargeable Remote Control with 'Find' Functionality

January 6, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CES -- Motorola, Inc. today announced an accessory for its popular VIP series of IPTV set tops that eliminates the hassle and expense of replacing batteries and helps consumers locate misplaced remote controls. The new rechargeable remote control and its base station are armed with RF (radio frequency) "find" functionality. A press of a switch on the base station triggers an audible tone and flashing light on all remote controls to help lead consumers to a missing unit.

"We're constantly listening to consumer feedback to help us develop new functionality," said Kevin Wirick, vice president of marketing at Motorola. "Losing a remote control is an issue that many end users find infuriating. With this product we're not only addressing this frustration but we've created a platform to extend the utility of the VIP set tops and remote control units by adding a USB or Bluetooth-connected accessory to the set top architecture."

Powered by wall sockets or through the set top via USB, the high performance rechargeable remote control and base unit eliminates the need for replacing single-use batteries and keeps the remote ready for action at all times. Performance is enhanced as the remote does not suffer from the reduction in range and response times caused by single use batteries as they near end of life.

Capable of learning functions, Motorola's VIP remote can replace multiple controls for most consumer electronic devices. The base station also includes a digital clock - a feature that has been lost as IPTV set tops have become increasingly streamlined in size.

Motorola ZN5 Raises Bar on Phone Cameras

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 Nearly every phone these days has a camera, but almost all of those take small, blurry, practically useless pictures unfit for even being part of the latest Facebook photo album. Useless and obsolete camera phones now face stiff competition from Motorola’s latest release, the MOTOZINE ZN5. By teaming up with Kodak, Motorola is able to offer users a fine phone and camera experience beating other “call and clicks” available in the marketplace.

Professional camera designer Kodak endowed this phone with 5 megapixels of power and the feel of a Kodak digital camera. With a camera like shutter button, flash option and viewer placement, the camera on the ZN5 looks less like a cheap afterthought and more like a prime strength of the phone. Combine it with easy sharing, and you finally have a camera on you at all times that you won’t mind taking pictures with.
