When only the best will do...

 Leica M9 black

Perhaps the most storied and revered name in all of photography is Leica. The company was at the forefront of the movement away from big bulky cameras to smaller 35mm cameras that almost all enthusiasts and professional photographers adopted. Along with Leica cameras, Leica lenses also enjoy exemplary specifications and reputations. My first "real" camera was a Leica M3 and I used it for countless photographs over a 30-year span. It slowly got less and less use when digital cameras achieved quality on par (or even better than) 35mm film. And as of this year, my favorite film, Kodachrome, is no longer even being manufactured.

After a few near misses, Leica has produced a camera of exceptional quality that Leica owners expect. I was fortunate to get a hands-on look, and short use of the camera from one of Leica's US representatives. The new M9 is a physically beautiful camera. It is the world's first digital rangefinder camera with a full-format 24 × 36mm digital sensor sporting 18 megapixels. As the most compact 35mm full-format camera now made, the M9 extends the legendary heritage of the Leica rangefinder M series and unites over 50 years of continuous technical improvements with the best in cutting-edge digital technology. LEICA Announces the D-LUX 4 Safari

 LEICA D-LUX 4 Safari

LEICA just announced a new special edition D-LUX 4 Safari digital camera. While with the same olive green outdoor look as the LEICA M8.2 Safari announced earlier this year, the D-LUX 4 Safari is the first compact digital cam offered in this special edition.

The D-LUX 4 Safari is the same camera as the D-LUX 4, only with a "safari" green finish. It features a 3-inch LCD display, Leica f/2.0-2.8 DC Vario-Summicron ASPH high speed, extra-wide-angle 24-60mm equivalent zoom lens, an oversized 1/1.63- inch, 10.1-megapixel CCD image sensor, Face Detection, Intelligent Auto mode, Optical Image Stabilization, and can record lossless RAW files as well as JPEGs.

A waterproof carrying case is also included with the camera. The back of the case has a compartment with a nylon "rain cape" that can be pulled out to cover the case and protect it from…well…rain (or other elements).

This limited edition LEICA D-LUX 4 Safari will be available in August 2009 for $995.

New Limited Edition LEICA M8.2 Safari

LEICA M2.2 Safari setGoing on a safari this year? If so, this may be the camera for you. LEICA just announced their new limited edition M8.2 Safari camera set in an olive green color. The set includes a brown calfskin leather carrying strap and a matching camera bag created by the camera bag specialists Billingham. This special edition is limited to only 500 cameras and will be available in February 2009.

Features include a 10.3 megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch display, RAW data capture, a silver anodized LEICA ELMARIT-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens with a metal lens shade, a silver E39 UV/IR filter, and it weighs only 6.3 ounces.

Fair warning...this limited edition M8.2 Safari set comes in at a hefty price of around $10,000. But then again, if you can afford to go on a safari, you can probably afford this camera.

Special Edition Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium

Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium Leica is adding another camera to their line of titanium special edition cameras. Leica is limiting the D-LUX 4 Titanium to 10,000 worldwide.

This collector's item is functionally identical to the regular D-LUX 4. The compact system camera's high aperture lens allows for use without a flash under more conditions than most compacts.

The Leica D-LUX has a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 24-60 mm lens and can store photos in fine, standard, raw or combinations.

It comes with a matching titanium colored leather case. Available accessories include a handgrip, auxiliary finder and flash.

Available at authorized dealers in January 2009.
