Anyone Remember Convergence?

 Logitech Couch Mouse M515

Having just returned from CES, I was watching the Steelers play the Baltimore Ravens and my thoughts turned to what I witnessed at CES that might make the 2011 Super Bowl even more enjoyable than it is already going to be. While writing my post show recap the thought that dominated my mind had little or nothing to do with actual product or technology and more about what people know and how they shop. Let me explain.

Q: When do consumers decide to buy a new TV?
A: Usually when the old TV breaks or when a compelling new technology becomes available.

Q: When do people invest in new audio products?
A: When they move or see a new compelling technology they must have.

Do you see a trend developing?

I was even more blown away by the fact that builders still build expensive new homes without structured wiring or even Ethernet jacks!

What am I leading up to? Let's think about what the biggest consumer complaints regarding consumer electronics have been over the last thirty years and everything we talked about so far will make sense. Remember the flashing twelve on the front of the VCR? How about the fact that we have six remotes and we still can only operate power, volume, input and channel! Maybe running wire from room to room was too expensive and control systems were the playground of the wealthy? These were all consumer issues. Read more

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest." Mr. Turkentine, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), Wolper Pictures Ltd.

We're not certain what the preoccupation is with TV, but firms beyond the old-fashioned content developers, producers, "shippers" have gone out of their way to say they have the solution you need/want!

First, there was the bi-annual IFA conference in Berlin. All of the consumer electronics folks gathered to spin their TV, video, whatever stories and show their wares.

That was followed by IBC in Amsterdam. There, the worldwide broadcast industry gathered to figure out how they were going to survive and make money with the growing demand for online video and audio content.Read more

Battle Looming for TV OS

 Battle of OS

Everyone loves apps! A library of 225,000 iPhone/iPad apps and 5 billion downloads are impressive numbers for such a young platform and confirm the fast growing interest in apps-based computing. Not only can apps run on smartphones, tablets and laptops but we predict the next platform for apps will be connected TVs. We see a living room where TV viewers click on a weather app or sports app instead of watching the local news. A home where families play a board game together on the TV using the Monopoly app, or stay in touch with their friends with a FaceBook app, all from the comfort of the living room couch.

Microsoft Unlikely to Win this Battle

Unlike the battle for the desktop OS it doesn't look like Microsoft has much of a chance of winning this battle for the TV OS. Competition over who will provide a TV OS is heating up with Google TV getting set to take on all comers for control of the living room. Meanwhile Apple may soon lob a salvo with an updated version of their Apple TV that will plant Apple iPhone/iPad apps firmly in the living room TV.Read more

Is The Internet Killing Cable TV?

 Philips Net TV

Gone are the days of racing home for Must-See-TV. Now you can record shows, skip commercials, and watch TV online at home or on the go. But who's watching TV on the Internet, you ask? Well, over 50% of the people asked, that's who. So, is it generational? What other factors play a role? And is the market listening? In fact, the market is listening. At CES 2010, TVs with built-in Internet connectivity were on display at all the major TV manufacturers' pavilions.

Retrevo, the company that provided this report, has noticed a growing interest in TVs that connect. This report gives you a snapshot of online TV viewership and discovers what appears to be a trend toward Internet TV patronage.Read more
