CES Show Wrap: It's a Show, It's Biz, Live with It

 2011 CES Show Floor

Open the Gates – With more than 31 football fields of show space, CES attendees have to crowd in opening day and walk themselves ragged in hopes of not just seeing all the show but seeing what will win/fail big in the coming year.

While a few folks have said CES is on its last leg, we wonder if they were at the same show we were this month.

More than 3,100 exhibitors squeezed into a mere 1.861 million net square feet (31+ football fields) of exhibit space and the show drew more than 153,000 attendees.

There was the urban sprawl of the big boys trying to out-glitz each other (even as they experienced record losses or marginal profits).

Microsoft announced that this was their last keynote, last time of exhibiting; and folks immediately said, "See the show is losing its relevance in a real-time world."

These same folks probably said Ballmer couldn't get out of his own way.

Suddenly he's brilliant?

Folks pointed out that really big things in the past have gone on to bomb, die.

You know Palm/WebOS, netbooks, 3D TV, etc.Read more

CES 2012 Day Two

Amazing iPhone Camera Rig, Cool New Car Tech and More CES news

 CES logo

Today was the official opening day at CES and the crowds showed up as expected. I started my day at the Intel booth and ended up at Showstoppers which is another press only event in the evening. As always, there was a lot to see and some very cool new technology like new car tech and of course the new 55-inch OLED TV which was on display showing passive 3D at the LG booth. Here are videos of some things that caught our eye.

Intel Life Forms Exhibit
Every year Intel has some amazing demonstration that is powered by one or two of their multi-core processors. This year they had some 3D scanners that turned whatever you put under them into a "life form" that "evolved" and interacted with other life forms.

Game Developer's Conference: Day 2

 Panasonic 3DTV

The bad thing about events in Northern California is that there are always a number of them going on in the tech industry and usually they have a knack to overlap.

Take today.

Yes GDC is still on but then down in San Jose is a two-day OTTCon (over the top conference) taking place. No biggie you say but these are the guys/gals who are going give us a hint on what we'll be watching, where we'll be watching it, how we'll be watching it.

Affects the way you work with games too!

OTTCon Snapshot

These folks have a huge challenge ahead of them. They're busting each other's chops trying to figure out exactly what tomorrow's TV entertainment is going to be like especially since people seem to want to push it to every screen you have (and even will be thinking about).

That's not so bad but they're really trying to figure out how they're going to get their money out of it! And how does it fit into/compete in the YouTube online spectrum? It does!

They were an energetic crowd but the first thing you realize is that they don't have any better idea where TV is going than you do…but they say it with confidence/conviction so it "feels" so!Read more

Our Next Great Tech CEO - Hero or Cheerleader?

Admit it. You missed Steve opening WWDC (Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference). You missed him walking out at the end of Phil Schiller's keynote where Steve walks from behind the curtain and says , "One more thing!"

 No Show

No Show – Despite all of the wild speculation, Steve Jobs didn't show up at WWDC and according to his earlier statements plans to be back at 1 Infinity Circle late this month. Oh yes, the team put on a very good event focusing on business, not personalities.

There was no colored water to dazzle folks. No one sat down on the chair, whipped off the shoes and socks, held them in the air and said "today we're unveiling iSox." And five million people ran to the Apple store scooping up pairs at $50 per. There was no rush to roll-out matching laces, iSox cases, a dizzying array of toenail colors mixed. You had to focus on the announcements rather than the man. Maybe – just maybe – the PC/CE/communications industry has passed thru another stage of growth, dare we say maturation?

The business world goes through phases and the technologies industry has gone from techie gee whiz stuff to fashion statements. The business and consumer industry today changes fast. It changes more frequently than skirt length.Read more

Intel Announces Next-Gen Atom Platform!

 Pineview

The Pine Trial platform will feature the Pineview CPU. It will integrate the memory controller and the GPU on the same die as the CPU. The picture above shows how this processor and platform will shrink the number of chips on the Atom platform from 3 to 2. Compared to NVIDIA's Ion processor, Pineview is not as powerful. However, you can expect the Pineview processor to be cheaper and drain less power, thus, giving your netbook a longer battery life. Also, Intel could overclock the processor to compete with the Ion, but then it would consume more energy.

The Pineview processor is a 45nm part, but the process node for the I/O hub is not known (some speculate it will be 130nm or 90nm). Also, the memory controller is unknown, but some current rumors suggest that it will be a single-channel DDR2 controller. Hopefully Intel will reveal more info soon.

LG Electronics, Intel Collaborate on Future Mobile Internet Devices

February 16, 2009 -- LG Electronics and Intel Corporation today announced a collaboration around mobile Internet devices (MIDs) based on Intel’s next-generation MID hardware platform, codenamed “Moorestown,” and Linux-based Moblin v2.0 software platform. The LG device is expected to be one of the first Moorestown designs to market.

LG and Intel’s common goal is to unleash rich Internet experiences across a range of mobile devices while delivering the functionality of today’s high-end smart phones. The collaboration on the new design extends a close working relationship the two companies have enjoyed across their respective mobile product lines, which now spans the notebook, netbook and MID categories.

“The MID segment will drive growth at LG Electronics. We chose Intel’s next-generation Moorestown platform and Moblin-based OS to pursue this segment because of the high performance and Internet compatibility this brings to our service provider customers,” said Jung Jun Lee, executive vice president of LG Electronics and head of its Mobile Communications Business Division. “The collaboration with Intel on the MID platform has been valuable and further extends our longstanding relationship.
