MacWorld: It's The Event, Not the Tradeshow

 MacWorld 2012

2nd Event – While CES has a much wider array of Apple-centric products/solutions than this year's Macworld/iWorld, the event was still an opportunity for the fans to see what all of the iTalk was about and to renew old acquaintances.

If you spent a few days in SinCity for Macworld I (CES) to see the star-studded array of Apple-centric hardware, software, semi-ware; it sorta' took your breath away.

Then you go to San Francisco to see Macworld II to see a lot of the same only with a dramatically smaller venue.

At Macworld I, there were thousands of booths and hundreds of thousands of people jamming in booths, standing in cab lines and hoping for a dinner reservation.

At Macworld II, there were hundreds of booths, thousands of people checking out stuff with credit cards in hand, hailing cabs, eating at charming out-of-the-way restaurants.

The biggest news at the event wasn't the stuff on the floor but:

  • Apple's blow-out results for the quarter in sales/profits
  • Apple's huge cache of money (nearly $100B) sitting in offshore accounts
  • Apple passing HP in PC sales
  • The assertions that Apple didn't care about the working conditions for employees at their suppliers (fortunately, Cook subsequently and vehemently said wasn't true)

CES 2012 Day Two

Amazing iPhone Camera Rig, Cool New Car Tech and More CES news

 CES logo

Today was the official opening day at CES and the crowds showed up as expected. I started my day at the Intel booth and ended up at Showstoppers which is another press only event in the evening. As always, there was a lot to see and some very cool new technology like new car tech and of course the new 55-inch OLED TV which was on display showing passive 3D at the LG booth. Here are videos of some things that caught our eye.

Intel Life Forms Exhibit
Every year Intel has some amazing demonstration that is powered by one or two of their multi-core processors. This year they had some 3D scanners that turned whatever you put under them into a "life form" that "evolved" and interacted with other life forms.

HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One C510a Review

 HP Photosmart eStation C510a

When you think of office printing, it's hard not to think of HP. It's a safe bet that any person or company who has ever owned a printer has probably owned an HP.

Over the course of the last couple of years, HP has sought to really innovate what a printer looks like and the way we use them. Take their latest Photosmart eStation C510a. This baby is a fast color inkjet multi-function device with a unique difference. HP calls this "difference" the Zeen, a removable touchscreen control panel running the Android 2.1 operating system and offering tablet-PC-like functionality, including Web browsing. It even acts as detachable eReader.

Where to Buy: Amazon

No one can argue that tablets are probably the best selling consumer electronics product this year. Marrying a printer with a tablet is an interesting idea to say the least, but if you're willing to spend a little more on your inkjet, you do get a pretty nice little ancillary Android device that allows you to do some limited, but fun functions.

The 7-inch Zeen looks and works great as the C510a control panel. Its color touchscreen is gorgeous, and it accepts "taps" and "swipes" for navigating and performing key printing functions. When the Zeen is undocked, you still are able to control the Photosmart eStation, or you can print from an SD card loaded in the top-mounted slot, as well as print Web pages.Read more

Home Office Highway: Americana a Way Norman Rockwell Never Envisioned

By Jeff Zbar

 Home Office Highway

Summertime's a great time to hit the open road – without leaving life behind. Technology widely available to the consumer market helps the "anywhere" office – and online personality – come alive without an electrical outlet or Ethernet cable in sight. This is Americana in a way Norman Rockwell never could have imagined.

This summer, the Home Office Highway '11 road show will showcase the tech, tools and tips that empower people to work and play from the interstate highway – or the information superhighway. The three-week excursion and social media event will highlight how "location independence" can be found wherever life's journey ventures.

This year, we'll travel from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco. Part sightseeing trip, part college tour, all fun-n-games. The van will have laptops, digital cameras and other technology common to the modern family home.

As families grow up, so do their technology needs, even when they're on vacation. We'll file blogs, Facebook updates, tweets and videos from the road. We'll even manage family finances effortlessly from anywhere. "With wifi, the cloud and a computer, you can work and play from anywhere." Read more
