How to Protect Your PC

Gateway DX440 PC security software is a necessity for any PC connecting to the Internet. However, deciding which PC security software to use can be tough. Major PC security software companies have deals with the large PC manufacturers to include trial versions of their software in the hopes that when the trial is over, you'll hand over your hard-earned cash for continued protection. The tactic works: People are so confused over what to do, they just pay the money. Who really wants to figure out how to replace the security software that came with the PC or what to replace it with?

Norton and McAfee antivirus products are the two most popular and most widely used. However, their PC security software has become so complex and complicated that it cannot only be difficult to understand and operate, but it can also severely degrade a computer's performance. Security suites have become so bloated they can even cause computers to crash upon installation. And uninstalling them can render a computer completely unusable if the uninstall does not complete correctly. Also, even after being successfully uninstalled, many files, folders and registry entries related to the PC security software are often left behind, requiring a manual clean-up to actually rid yourself of them completely. How to Green Your Commute

trafficDo you often sit in rush hour traffic, engine idling, going nowhere fast? Is your commute taking longer than it used to because of all the other cars on the road? America's urban commuters now waste an entire workweek each year -- some 38 hours -- stuck in traffic, according to a traffic study released late last year by Texas A&M University's Texas Traffic Institute.

Not only is that wasted time you could have spent doing something constructive, it's a major problem for the health of our planet. Idling car engines are a significant contributor to the greenhouse emissions leading to global warming which has become, in the last 15 years or so, a major issue of international proportions. But there are steps commuters can -- and should take -- to reduce their impact on the environment. Read more

Screen Savers: How to Have a Better Picture for Less $

A/V Room Service Ltd.The intention of this article is to save you considerable money, while at the same time, afford you a better picture, all by selecting the right screen at the right location. Next to acoustics, screen selection is the most complicated element of the home theater design process, and least considered.

Screen Location
It all starts with location. Referring back to an earlier article in this series, we discussed how the number of seats dictates the room dimensions and that room dimensions dictate optimum speaker and listener locations. Once we determine these positions, we know that we want the sound to seem as if it is being created by the picture, rather than coming from in front of, below, above, behind or to the side of it. That said, we want the screen to be located about the same distance from us as the center channel speaker. Read more

How to Get Your High-Speed Internet via Cell Phone Networks

Sony VAIORight now, I’m in a motel. I'm browsing several sites for information to include in this article; downloading a 10 MB file in the background; and Outlook is checking for new email every five minutes. But this motel offers no Internet access. My laptop's WiFi adapter cannot find an unsecured wireless network to tap. I'm not wired to the room's phone so I'm not using a dialup ISP. How can I possibly be on the Internet at all, let alone at 1.5 or more Mbps?

The answer, in my case, is Sprint Mobile Broadband, one offering of the latest generation of high-speed Internet service delivered via cell phone networks. It's like having a portable cable modem. Indoors or outdoors, at a café table or in a moving taxi, if I can get a four-bar or stronger Sprint signal I’m online at broadband speed, without wires. This is cooler than a polar bears' picnic! How to Easily Resolve Your Family's Data-Storage Issue

NetDisk With more families using home networking for everything from storing photos to downloading music and videos, a new challenge has evolved: how to store large amounts of data in a way that can be accessed by every member of the family.

"While technology has improved our lives in so many ways, it's also created an issue within the household -- how to store data so that anyone in the family can access it at any time from a number of different devices," says Dennis Gentles, chief executive officer of Klegg Electronics, a manufacturer and distributor focused on producing consumer electronics products that work seamlessly within the home. "Research shows that 67 percent of families have three or more computers connected to a home network. That's a lot of opportunity for conflict over data sharing."

How to Upgrade Your Video Graphics Card

Gateway NX570 Series The video card that is inside of your computer is responsible for what you are seeing on your monitor right now and how good your PC games play. Video cards, also known as graphic cards, can come pre-built into your motherboard or can be an actual card that fits securely into a slot on your motherboard. Either way, your video card is very important, and becomes more important as graphics become more demanding.

First let's talk about what type of video cards there are, and which one you should get. Upgrading your current video card has become a very simple task because it only slides right into a slot on your computer. Your video card can go into one of two slots, PCI or AGP. Chances are that your computer has both, but which one is the best you ask? By far AGP is the better technology since it processes data much faster then PCI. Unfortunately if you have a computer that was bought before the year 2000, most likely you don't have an AGP slot, or at least not the fastest. Yes, AGP slots can come in many different speeds too, like 1x, 2x and so on and so forth. Read more
