Summer Skincare Tips for Men

Michele ProbstIn the summer skin becomes more oily and as humidity rises so does the moisture content of your skin. Men have 20% more oily skin and significantly larger pores than women. Basically, this means men need to take care of their skin.

Follow these tips for stunning, healthy skin. Be confident and put your best face forward for a sizzling summer.

Wake Up Your Face
Cleanse. Exfoliate. Tone Up. Nourish. Protect. Avoid

Cleanse.
Clarify your skin by daily washing your face. Cleansing products should be all natural and chemical free. Deodorant soaps shouldn’t be used on your face. This may irritate your skin and will clog your pores because the soaps consist of harsh ingredients.

Exfoliate.
It’s essential for flawless, glowing skin. A good scrub will remove dead cells and smooth the surface of your skin. A jojoba based scrub won’t tear the skin and also gives immediate results. Exfoliate to reveal gorgeous skin.

Tone Up
Because you spend a lot of time outside, environmental debris and pollutants are a factor to your skin’s health. Toning helps keep your face clear and firm. As skin ages, it needs to work harder to maintain its elasticity. Astringents and toners with glycolic or alpha hydroxyl acids work best. These acids actually reduce the pore size and help avoid ingrown hairs.

Nourish
Treat your skin by using a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing and shaving. It is very important to hydrate all areas of your skin especially the sensitive under eye area. This is one of the first places to show signs of aging and should not be looked over. An eye gel or serum that contains chamomile or Vitamin E will refresh and nourish the sensitive under eye area.

Protect
Defend your skin by avoiding over exposure to the sun. As stated by Brian S. Biesman, M.D., F.A.C.S., “90% percent of premature aging of the skin is caused by overexposure to the sun. Failure to protect and care for your skin not only leads to wrinkling and aging but it increases your risk of developing skin cancer, the most prevalent of all cancers in the United States. More than one million Americans are newly diagnosed every year, and nearly every affected individual has a strong history of over exposure to sunlight or tanning. The likelihood of developing cancer is even higher when sun exposure results in burning and blistering.”

Avoid Skin Cancer
Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater 30 minutes before sun exposure.

Select prescription eyeglass lenses such as Transitions® Lenses, which provide automatic protection by blocking 100 percent UV rays.Think of it as sunscreen for the eyes. Transitions lenses also protect the sensitive skin surrounding the eye from UV. These should be included in your overall skin cancer protection regimen.

Avoid direct sun exposure during the peak UV radiation hours between 10:00am and 3:00pm.

Perform skin self-exams regularly to become familiar with existing growths and to notice any changes or new growths.
