Cool Stuff to Keep You Warm

Smartwool socksIt was Friday, the 13th, a day before Valentine's. As grandparents, we celebrate the day before typically so we can be with our grandchildren on Valentine's Day. My husband was on his way home from work and decided to give me a call. He said he had something for me . . . socks. Socks??? Isn't that what he is supposed to receive along with ties at Christmas? Maybe I misunderstood and he meant some new software or something. Surely not socks!

I was so excited because he would be arriving home early. However, as you can imagine, that excitement quickly dwindled when he handed me none other than a pair of socks! Well, I must admit I couldn't get too upset at this point as truly I needed the socks to go out that evening. Besides, they were blue to match the jeans. So, I slipped on the pair of Smartwool Women's Adrenaline crew socks. Immediately, I was amazed at the difference I felt in my feet - like I have never felt before with a pair of socks. I threw on the loafers which typically hurt my arch after wearing for an hour or so (my dreadful attempt at dressing up the jeans). And, away we went.

Well, I am always cold - particularly my feet and usually feet before other parts. As I typically do in the car, I cranked up the heat on my feet. See, he controls the thermostat at home and I control it in the car. And believe me, with it being a convertible, the heater works extremely well. Later though, I hardly noticed the cold and it was freezing temperatures. Now, either I'm going through menopause or these socks are truly great! And, yes, I've tried what were supposed to be great socks for camping, sports, hiking, etc.

The ultimate test for any winter sock is, of course, when you remove the shoes -- especially since I had cranked up the heat in the car on my feet from home to the restaurant. And, what better way to annoy my spouse just a bit for bringing me a pair of socks! Well, much to my chagrin . . . it didn't work!

So, I dug the wrapper out of the trash to investigate what makes the socks so special. The 100% Smartwool next to the skin is designed applying SmartTechnology to the fibers to make them soft as our new granddaughter's bottom and it manages moisture and temperature better than cotton or synthetics. The top of the sock has a 1 x 1 turn roll wait which holds the sock in place without heavy constriction on the leg; flat knit ½ cushion leg for tight comfort fit without the indentation of traditional rib construction on the back of the leg above the ankle; an elasticized ankle brace - to hold sock in place and prevent slippage down into the boot; contoured flex zone with 4 way diagonal knit, which allows feet and sock to flex without unwanted fabric bunching; waffle knit instep that provides maximum ventilation for temperature and moisture control; elasticized arch brace for additional foot support; and a flat knit toe seam. All serve their design purpose incredibly well.

After having worn the dreaded loafers for several hours, I didn't have the pain in my arch either. With that and odor control in a sock, what more could you ask for? As for a husband . . . well . . . it is the thought that counts. www.smartwool.com
