The Vernal Equinox Provides a Heavenly Experience at Iberostar’s Resorts

March 2005 - Twice a year, the world experiences the astronomical phenomenon, known as the Vernal Equinox, wherein day and night become of equal length, and a magical silhouette ensues. On March 21st, 2005, thousands of visitors and residents alike will converge at the ruins of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula to observe a Vernal Equinox phenomenon. Unique only to this historic site, visitors can view a shadow resembling a huge serpent that is cast upon the steps of El Castillo temple.

El Castillo, a mysterious temple and pyramid, was built for astronomical purposes by the Mayans, a remarkable people who had mapped the heavens, invented a true writing system and as master mathematicians, created the calendar we use today -- all while Europe was still in the midst of the Dark Ages. On this special day, the crowds stand in awe of a scientific and architectural masterpiece, as the Equinox bathes the western balustrade of the pyramid's main stairway with warm sunlight, creating the illusion of a giant snake.

As the astronomy and architectural enthusiasts congregate in the area, they will find that any one of Iberostar Hotels & Resorts six Mexican properties offer convenient and perfect accommodations. Among the five resorts in the Yucatan Peninsula and one on Cozumel, the newest and highest tier addition to Iberostar is the five-star Iberostar Paraiso Maya, located less than three hours from Chichen Itza on the Riviera Maya but with close ties.

In the spirit of the Vernal Equinox and its association with the Mayan culture, the main entrance of Paraiso Maya is inspired by the famous El Castillo Pyramid. A huge copper chandelier in the serpentine form of a winding snake towers over the main bar. At night, the serpent sculpture is illuminated with colorful, jewel-like lights. Adding to the look of Mayan authenticity is the centering of the 432 suites and two presidential suites around a flower-filled courtyard and the thatch-roofed buildings.

The Vernal Equinox is known as the springtime day of renewal. What better place for guests to renew their spirit than the Iberostar Paraiso Maya? The resort offers eight pools, including five shared with sister resort Iberostar Paraiso Lindo and three smaller pools exclusively for guests of Iberostar Paraiso Maya.
