Sun-Denshi Now Shipping OnlineStation Internet Gaming Peripheral
Calif., May 7 -- PCTEL the leader
in cost-effective software-based connectivity for millions of Internet users,
today announced that Sun-Denshi (Sun Corp.) has begun shipping its
OnlineStation, a small and compact USB 56K device to provide Internet
connectivity for the internationally-popular SCEI (Sony Computer Entertainment
Inc.) PlayStation2 computer entertainment system. PCTEL's Solsis(TM)
embedded modem technology was selected for the OnlineStation(TM) in order to
offer consumers a compact and reliable gaming peripheral.
PCTEL's Solsis features a Texas Instruments TMS320C5000 Digital Signal
Processor with PCTEL's proprietary embedded modem software and a two-chip
integrated silicon CODEC/World DAA that incorporates a patented multi-country
programmable configuration. It is compliant and compatible with local phone
access in over 65 countries.
"PCTEL's embedded modem technology is playing a key role in bringing Internet connectivity to a growing market of non-PC consumer appliances," noted William Roach, chief executive officer and president of PCTEL. "Because of its highly integrated design, Solsis gives manufacturers the flexibility to create compact yet powerful electronic communications devices at a lower cost. In the gaming industry, for example, it gives Sun-Denshi the opportunity to introduce a device that brings an exciting new level of interactive play to the popular SCEI PlayStation(R) 2." "PCTEL's modem technology is playing a key role in helping us bring Internet gaming products to market quickly and cost-effectively," said Hiroaki Higashiya, manager for Sunsoft division of Sun-Denshi. "Sun-Denshi's OnlineStation modem and browser application, exclusively designed for the SCEI PlayStation 2, will immerse consumers in a new and exciting Internet environment," "This is the first product to ship in the consumer market to take advantage of the embedded communications solution that combines the TI TMS320C5000 DSP platform and PCTEL's Solsis embedded modem solution," said Mark Mattson, C5000 business development manager, Texas Instruments. "Together, we are offering OEM developers an inexpensive plug-and-play solution for virtually every alternative Internet access device connecting to the Internet."
