Stay Dry Provides Waterproof Protection for Casts
July 2004 – Xero Products has developed a product that offers patients wearing casts, bandages or prosthetics complete waterproof protection. Stay Dry, also known as XeroSox, is a surgical latex sleeve that fits over the appendage and vacuum seals to assure that water does not enter the cast or limb, even when the limb is fully submerged.
Developed by Wilmington podiatrist Dr. Roy Archambault, DPM, ABFS, Stay Dry is giving patients with fractured bones and prosthetic limbs the opportunity to shower and fully participate in water activities. Dr. Archambault began distributing Stay Dry in 1999 after more than 20 years of experience in podiatric and ambulatory medicine. Stay Dry is affordably priced, ranging from $29.00-$39.00 depending on the size.
"A bone fracture can mean weeks wearing a cast or splint that cannot be exposed to water," said Dr. Archambault. "With Stay Dry, the vacuum seal is a clear indication that the product is waterproof and remains waterproof even when it's under water. Patients can feel completely comfortable showering or even going into the ocean."
Added Felicia Whaley, certified orthopaedic tech at Wilmington Orthopeadic Group in Wilmington, NC, “Stay Dry is by far the best cast protection product available. I’ve reviewed a wide variety of competing products, but none have the vacuum seal that distinguishes Stay Dry. We recommend Stay Dry to patients who will have a cast on for any period of time because it enables them to shower easily and enjoy water sports throughout their recovery. Stay Dry is a small price to pay to protect your cast against water damage when you compare it to the expense of replacing a cast altogether.”
For injuries treated with soft casts or bandages that require hydrotherapy, the Stay Dry can be used to waterproof the injury while treatment begins. The ability to begin treatment while still in a cast or bandage can expedite the healing process. Other persistent medical conditions that cannot be exposed to water may also be protected by the Stay Dry, such as a peripherally inserted central catheter.
Stay Dry is manufactured to accommodate the arm from hand to elbow and from hand to above the elbow, and for the leg from foot to below the knee and for the full leg. It comes in a range of sizes to fit children as young as two years of age as well as adults up to 6' 6" tall. The product is made of surgical latex that can stretch up to 600 percent without tearing. For the Stay Dry leg products, the sole of the latex sleeve features the Non-Skid Grid to prevent slipping in the bathtub or on wet pool decks.
"Traditional water protection products such as plastic sleeves with velcro or adhesive closures do not fully seal and often leak through to the cast or bandage. The plastic is easily torn, and once wet is extremely slick, leading to instability," said Dr. Archambault.
Stay Dry is available at many home health stores and online at www.GetWetStayDry.com or by calling 1 (888)–937-6768 (XEROSOX). Orders placed by 2:00 p.m. EST can be shipped overnight. Quick and efficient delivery means that patients return to regular routines as soon as possible.
