Stars Shine At Mardi Gras Celebration
Feb. 20, 2003 -- The City of New Orleans is once again preparing to host Mardi Gras! Over a million tourists and locals will again flood the streets for this annual celebration, which is expected to draw record crowds. Numerous festive events, such as lavish balls and parades, will be scattered throughout the city during the two weeks leading up to March 4, also known as Fat Tuesday.
When asked about Mardi Gras, or the "Greatest Free Show on Earth", New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin exclaimed "When the marching bands kick in, you won't be able to keep your feet still. When float riders taunt you with beads, you won't be able to stop screaming, 'Throw me something, Mister!'"
Parade-goers this year can anticipate plenty of screaming, as several celebrities have already signed on as guest riders. Aerosmith rockers Steven Tyler and Joe Perry will team up as co-Grand Marshals of the Krewe of Orpheus, and director Spike Lee will be crowned King Zulu 2003. Lee is the first celebrity monarch Zulu has named since 1949, when Louis Armstrong was famously honored. Comedian Jon Lovitz, who is also a film star and former Saturday Night Live cast member, has plans to get in on the action, too. He will reign as King Bacchus XXXV, while platinum-recording artist Edwin McCain will preside as Grand Marshal over the Krewe of Pegasus.
This year, millions of online visitors will use the Internet to learn about the traditions and culture surrounding this holiday and to see live broadcasts of these exciting parades and events. Details about Mardi Gras 2003, including parade routes, recommendations on lodging, and informational videos are available now at http://www.mardigrasday.com. Also available are colorful pictures of last year's celebration, cajun recipe ideas, and decorating tips (as a consolation prize) for those who just can't make it down to the Big Easy this year.
