Seiko SmartPad Seiko Instruments recently announced the launch of SmartPadä, a breakthrough product for users of Palm connected organizers. With SmartPad, handwritten notes and drawings are instantly transferred from paper to the Palm via infrared port.

"SmartPad is a boon for people who rely on Palm organizers but prefer the traditional feel and convenience of taking notes with pen and paper," said Mike Del Vecchio, Director of Sales and Marketing for Seiko Instruments' Business & Home/Office Products Division. "Users can view their handwritten notes on the Palm , then store them, organize them, and even e-mail them directly from the Palm via compatible modem or cellular phone."

The SmartPad is a sleek, easy-to-carry note pad portfolio, measuring 7.25"H x 10.5"W x 1.5"D, and with space for a standard 5" x 8" note pad and Palm connected organizer. As users write on the notepad with the SmartPen™ (included), their notes and drawings are instantly transferred to the Palm. Notes can then be copied to a notebook or desktop PC via the Palm HotSync® operation. Once saved on a computer, notes and drawings can be viewed, printed or attached to e-mail messages as .GIF files.

The SmartPad, which is powered by two AAA alkaline batteries (included), is compatible with the Palm III™ series or later models. System requirements include an IBM-compatible Pentium® or faster computer running Windows® 95 or later, 16 MB RAM minimum, 16 MB of available hard disk space and a CD-ROM drive. The SmartPen comes with five ink refill cartridges, and replacements are available from Seiko Instruments' Web site. Two 5" x 8" notepads are included in the SmartPad package as well. Seiko Instruments' SmartPad is now available at an estimated street price of $199.
