Parasound's CSE 6.1 Adds Center Surround Channel to 5.1 Channel Systems
Parasound has introduced the CSE 6.1 Center Surround Expander that can process program materials encoded for THX Surround EX or DTS-ES Matrix processing. It derives a matrix rear center channel output from the left and right surround channel signals. It will work with any 5.1 channel home theater processor or A/V receiver with line level outputs for the surround channels.
When used with properly recorded program materials, the CSE 6.1 creates a remarkably defined sound stage that envelops the viewer in a cocoon of sound. Sonic ambience and specific sounds appear naturally from all around the listener; and the technology enables special effects such as sonic flyovers.
The unique design of the CSE 6.1 creates superior surround effects from Surround-Ex as well as more satisfying effects from many 5.1 encoded sources. Whereas Surround-EX depends on old Dolby Pro Logic processing, the CSE 6,1 uses advanced Circle Surround processing, which Parasound found to be superior in testing.
The CSE 6.1 provides two center channel outputs in case listeners prefer to use two speakers for their center surround effects It also provides a Rear Sub jack and adjustable rear sub crossover, at 80Hz, 120Hz and full range, for subs with non-defeatable built in crossovers. The added impact of rear surround effects using the rear sub is substantial.
There are also auxiliary surround output channels which may be used for ceiling surround speakers.
The Parasound CSE 6.1 is easy to set up. It connects between the surround controller's LS and RS outputs and the power amplifier inputs. Calibration is easy thanks to a supplied infrared remote control that operates the Engage and Calibrate switches, and the center surround channel level control.
In its 'bypass' position, the Engage button allows the LS and RS signals to completely bypass the CSE 6.1 for pure 5.1. While this setting is used for most 5.1 program material and during calibration of the 5.1 system, some 5.1 sources do sound better with 6.1 processing.
Once the 5.1 system is properly adjusted, the CSE 6.1 is engaged, and the Calibrate button enables setting the center surround level relative to the previously calibrated left and right surrounds. An LED labeled '6.1 Info' tells the user when the program source includes material that can be decoded in the CS channel.
The CSE 6.1 Center Surround Expander is the latest in Parasound's Z Series of half-width custom-installation problem solvers. Other components in this series, which are all just 9-1/2 inches wide, include an A/V preamplifier, phono preamplifier, 2 x 30 Watts zone amplifier, FM/AM reference tuner, and a loudspeaker selector.
The Parasound CSE 6.1 will be available in December with a suggested retail price of $400.
