Palm Digital Media Unveils New eBook Application
July 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MACWORLD, Palm Digital Media, the leading publisher and distributor of eBooks for handhelds, and a division of PalmSource, provider of the world's leading operating system for handhelds and smart phones, unveiled new versions of its award-winning Palm Reader eBook application for Mac and Windows today at Macworld Expo. The announcement opens the Palm Reader library of nearly 5,500 titles to millions of desktop and notebook computer users.
"For the first time, eBook readers can build a library of eBooks that they can read on-the-go, at work or from home on their platform of choice," said Jeff Strobel, director of Palm Digital Media. "Although Palm Reader was originally designed for handhelds, users will be instantly comfortable and familiar with the features and navigation tools no matter which platform they choose." Computer users with an Internet connection can purchase, download and start reading Palm Reader eBooks in almost every category of literature and move easily between desktops, notebooks and handhelds. For example, the new versions make it easy to start reading an eBook on a Mac desktop at home or work, and finish it on a Palm Powered handheld while on-the-go. "Mac OS X is a super-modern operating system with cutting edge graphics capabilities including Quartz, OpenGL, and QuickTime," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "The new Palm Reader takes advantage of many of the strengths of Mac OS X to display content in a format that lets customers move with ease between notebooks, desktops and handhelds." One eBook, Four Platforms
Palm Reader's Digital Rights Management system protects against unauthorized distribution of titles while offering readers the option of enjoying eBooks from top selling authors such as Stephen King, Raymond Chandler, Lawrence Block, Nelson DeMille, Nora Roberts and Robert Ludlum. Users also may read research materials and documents they create themselves. Using the Palm eBook Studio authoring tool, a user can create an eBook from scratch or cut and paste information from other applications, such as Microsoft Word, or import files in Rich Text Format or HTML format. Each computing platform requires a different version of Palm Reader. Customers simply download the version of Palm Reader for their preferred computing platform to their hard drive where they can either synchronize it with a Palm Powered handheld or Pocket PC device, or read the eBooks on a Mac or Windows computers. Once Palm Reader is installed, eBooks can be transferred and read on all four platforms without modification. Palm Reader for Desktops automatically resizes the eBook for a larger screen and reflows the text. It offers many of the same features available with the handheld version, allowing customers to bookmark pages, add notes, and change fonts and type sizes, plus it adds new features such as the ability to choose from a variety of backgrounds and more.
