Olympus Introduces Pocket-Sized Outback Binoculars

September 15, 2003– Responding to the needs of binocular fans who have been searching for a way to bring the world closer without having to lug heavy, uncomfortable gear, Olympus America today introduces the new lightweight Outback binoculars that fold up to about the size of a credit card for pocket portability. Whether at a concert, bird watching or hiking through the urban cityscape, users of the Outback binoculars will appreciate the excellent image quality provided by Olympus high-performance optics as well as features designed to maximize comfortable viewing.

Stylish
The Outback Binoculars (in two magnifications, either 8x21 or 10x21) have a streamlined, trim, contoured design and an attractive metallic silver finish that makes them both easy on the eyes and easy to handle. With an ultra-compact form about the size of a small cell phone, these models can be inconspicuously carried in a pocket and whipped out to bring distant objects into sharp focus at a moment’s notice. This is particularly helpful in situations where speed is critical, such as viewing swift birds and sighting celebrities.

Innovative
Both Outback models feature an inventive double-axis folding mechanism that allows the lenses to fold into the body of the binocular, making them even physically smaller in size and therefore more compact and portable.

The Outback binoculars also offer superior eye protection with Olympus special optical materials that reduce the transmission of harmful UV rays. Staring at objects for long periods of time is both safe and comfortable.

Exciting
It might have seemed unthinkable before to carry powerful binoculars around in a jacket pocket or purse. But at a weight of only 6.9 ounces, the new Outback models are light enough to take anywhere – expanding the horizons of all who use them.

Intelligent
Olympus high-index BaK-4 roof prisms and aspherical lens elements deliver crisp images from edge to edge, and fully multi-coated lenses maximize brightness and contrast. The close focusing capability makes the Outback binoculars ideal for theaters, concerts and birding.

Comfortable
People with less then perfect vision will rejoice when using the new Outback binoculars, because a built-in dioptric correction adjusts to each user’s individual eyesight to ensure that viewers will always see action clearly.

The Outback binoculars offer eye relief of 11mm, and the twist-up or down eyecups make adjustments a breeze. In addition, a large focusing knob in the center will allow for quick, precise focus adjustment, even when wearing gloves.

For wearers of glasses who want to keep them on when using the Outback binoculars, Olympus helps them do so with the binoculars’ “eye relief” that allows them to see the entire field of view even when wearing glasses, whether they are prescription lenses or sunglasses. Wearing or not wearing glasses, users of the Outback binoculars will experience a new level of enhanced performance and comfort.

Availability
The Outback binoculars will be available in Fall 2003. Included with the Outback binoculars are cases for safe storage, a neck strap, eye caps, instruction manual and a limited lifetime warranty to round out this tremendous offer from Olympus.
