NikonNet's April 2002 ‘Legends Behind the Lens’
APRIL 2002 - NikonNet has captured the prevalent theme of
Spirit
in this month's 'Legends Behind the Lens' (www.nikonnet.com/legends)
feature.
Nikon recognizes the strength and influence of John H. White as an
outstanding
photojournalist for over 30 years. He is currently a staff photographer at
the
Chicago Sun-Times and received a Pulitzer Prize for feature photography as
well
as three first place National Headliner Awards. John's photographs cover a
wide
range of topics from sports to spot news. However, John is committed to
developing
the entire story behind the images that are captured in his photographs.
"John White's spirit and enthusiasm in developing stories through
photographs
provides others with the motivation to create new and imaginative ways of
conveying
the stories they experience," said Tracy Mack-Jackson, Manager of Internet
Programs
at Nikon Inc. "He is an incredibly diverse photographer with a unique
excitement
and professional eye."
White's strong attitude of always doing your best helped him to overcome challenges both internal and external. He lives by three words, "faith, focus and flight," and constantly challenges himself to the extreme. He is committed to being faithful to himself and focused on his work, while at the same time spreading his wings to strive for his ultimate goal.
White accomplished his dream assignment over the course of the entire year of 2001. Using his Nikon Lite-Touch compact camera, he developed a visual notebook, testing his self-discipline by limiting himself to taking only one photo every day for a year. White titled this challenging project, "Glimpses of My Journey", a collection of moments and memories. Over the course of his many years as a photographer, White was awarded many honors including being the first photographer inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and has been the Chicago Press Photographer Association's Photographer of the Year a record five times. In addition, in 1999 White received Chicago's highest honor, the Chicago Medal of Merit. White encourages others to reach for their goals and "keep in flight."
