MV Discovery to Observe Complete Annular Eclipse of 2005
April 13, 2005 --On Friday, April 8th, 2005, at approximately 11:55 a.m. local time, approximately 900 passengers and crew aboard MV Discovery witnessed one of the most spectacular solar eclipses while cruising on Discovery World Cruises’ 19-night South Pacific Eclipse voyage. MV Discovery was en route from Pitcairn Island to Easter Island, and in the narrow 16-mile corridor from which the complete eclipse of the Sun could be observed.
Categorized as an annular eclipse, the Sun was fully obstructed except for a thin ‘ring of fire’ surrounding the silhouette of the moon for 33 seconds. What makes this solar eclipse particularly special was the near-perfect match in apparent size between the Sun and Moon, a celestial event that only occurs every 18 years.
Discovery World Cruises specializes in exploring faraway places in comfort and style. Unlike most mega-liners that dominate the open seas, MV Discovery is a mid-size ocean-liner which offers the amenities of a large vessel, but is small enough to visit out-of-the-way and exotic ports-of-call.
For the third consecutive season, MV Discovery will casts off for three exciting expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula in January 2006, where passengers will have multiple opportunities to go ashore on the White Continent. In addition, for the very first time, Discovery World Cruises will journey up the Amazon River to Manaus, Brazil in December 2005, and the Galapagos Islands in April 2006 this winter cruising season.
