Motorola and ReplayTV Develop Digital Set-Top Terminals with DVR Capabilities

May 1, 2001--In a move that will rapidly accelerate consumer adoption of personal TV in the cable industry, ReplayTV Inc., a leading provider of personal television and digital video recording (DVR) technologies, today announced it has signed a long-term licensing agreement with Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector. In the agreement, Motorola (NYSE:MOT) names ReplayTV a primary provider of core DVR software for the creation of Motorola's new personal television platform. ReplayTV's DVR technology will be integrated into Motorola's digital cable set-tops, with plans to be initially offered in Q4 of this year.
Last month SONICblue, a leader in the converging Internet, digital media and consumer device markets, signed a definitive agreement to acquire ReplayTV Inc., a move SONICblue describes as part of its vision to provide compelling technology for tomorrow's digital home. SONICblue's CEO Ken Potashner said ReplayTV's technology provides an excellent foundation from which to deliver next-generation digital entertainment products for companies such as Motorola.

"Personal television will be a key driver for sales of our advanced interactive digital set-top terminals," said Carl McGrath, vice president and general manager of Motorola's DigiCable(R) business. "ReplayTV stands out as a leader in personal television technology, and we look forward to working with them to bring a combined set-top terminal and personal TV product to market."

The new Motorola set-tops with integrated DVR functionality will allow users to record automatically their favorite shows onto a local hard disk. These set-tops will include open interfaces so that cable operators can use existing providers of program guides, video-on-demand systems, and middleware applications, and take advantage of the DVR technology.

"Motorola's global leadership position in set-top manufacturing is well known, and we are proud to play a key role in accelerating the introduction of personal television onto their digital cable platform. This partnership reinforces ReplayTV's position as the leading provider of personal television technology for the cable industry," said Anthony Wood, founder and chief executive officer of ReplayTV Inc.
