Motorola and Home Director Launch Joint Home-Networking Technology
11/30/2000--Motorola and Home Director, Inc. yesterday announced that
they are presenting their joint home-networking technology at the
Western Cable Show 2000, at Motorola's show area, Booth #1401.
This introduction, which closely follows the companies' formal announcement that they will work together to develop home- networking solutions, combines Motorola's SURFboard SB3500 internal cable modem with Home Director's Network Connection Center. The integration of these two devices allows for whole- house distribution of data, video signals, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony enabled by the SB3500.
Motorola's SURFboard SB3500 cable modem provides customers with always-on, always-connected convenience, eliminating frustrating dial-up time. It enables both voice and high-speed data services on a single network, allowing bundled pricing and increased revenue opportunities for operators.
The SB3500 features advanced, integrated IP telephony services and high- speed data access. RJ-11 jacks provide two lines of telephone service with simultaneous calls. The SB3500 is powered via uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or a wall-mounted transformer for primary or secondary line service.
Home Director's Network Connection Center forms the backbone of a home's technology infrastructure, allowing Internet services to be delivered and shared throughout the home, and allowing homeowners to connect multiple computers to share files, software, printers, and scanners, and to distribute cable, satellite, VCR and DVD video signals throughout the home. The Home Network Controller automated home management system controls lighting, security, and climate systems through a television, computer, or any device with a Web browser, either in the home or through a remote Internet connection.
"We are pleased to introduce our combined home-networking technology with Home Director at the Western Cable Show 2000," said Vince Izzo, Director of Home Networking for Motorola's IP Network Systems business unit. "By enabling the distribution of data, video signals, and phone lines, our solution can help create innovative applications to drive the demand for high-speed, cable- based broadband services and home networks."
"Home Director is pleased to be working with Motorola, an established leader in providing cable-based solutions," said Mary Walker, Home Director's President and Chief Executive Officer. "This solution is part of our strategy to enable broadband services throughout the home. By working together, we can deliver a full range of broadband services through a single connection to our customers."
Motorola and Home Director announced their agreement to develop joint home-networking technologies in October 2000. Under the agreement, the two companies are working together to integrate Motorola's cable modem technology into Home Director's Network Connection Center, as well as developing software applications for digital set-top terminals based on Home Director's automated home management system. Motorola and Home Director will jointly sell and market these home-networking solutions. In addition, Motorola made an equity investment in Home Director.
Home Director was launched in January 2000 as a spin-off of IBM's Home Networking Solutions Unit. Motorola's investment concludes Home Director's first round of funding at $55 million. Other institutional investors include Cisco Systems and IBM.
