McAfee Ships On-Device Virus Scanning Application for Palm HandheldsNew Micro Virus Scanning Engine Defends Palm OS Mobile Devices From Wireless Internet and Infrared-Transferred Viruses March 9 -- McAfee today announced the availability of VirusScan Wireless 2.0, one of the first anti-virus solutions built to detect and clean viruses on Palm OS-based handheld devices. The McAfee VirusScan Wireless 2.0 product enables e-businesses to protect against the emerging security threat caused by the proliferation of mobile devices within the corporate environment. McAfee's on-device anti-virus application allows users to protect their Palm OS handheld device from viruses in infrared- transferred files and applications, and data retrieved via wireless Internet applications. With the addition of VirusScan Wireless 2.0 to the McAfee family of products and services, McAfee is further supporting the enterprise anti-virus policy, providing virus protection at each network entry point, including the Internet gateway, e-mail server, desktop and now through handheld connectivity. As the first and only anti-virus vendor to protect all major handheld platforms from viruses during synchronization, McAfee now offers Palm users an option to scan for viruses and malicious code locally on the handheld device, during synchronization with the PC, and both on the device and during synchronization. McAfee's new resident micro scanning engine designed for the Palm OS platform is based on McAfee's industry-leading VirusScan technology. According to Giga Information Group, there will be over 32 million PDAs and smartphones by the year 2003, and Internet access on these devices will continue to contribute to the spread of viruses across the Internet. According to independent research organization Computer Economics, the economic impact of Internet virus attacks on information systems worldwide in the year 2000 amounted to $17.1 billion, an increase from Computer Economics' estimated $12.1 billion in 1999. McAfee has anticipated these new threats and the rapid growth of wireless technology, and is taking measures to ensure virus protection is provided on enterprise and mobile platforms. "With VirusScan Wireless 2.0, McAfee stands poised to provide virus protection to mobile devices that will leverage new wireless technologies, such as proximity networks and wireless LANs," said Ryan McGee, solution marketing manager for the McAfee Wireless family of products. "McAfee's wireless anti-virus technology protects handheld users from all known wireless viruses in existence. With our new on-device wireless anti-virus in place, McAfee is protecting Palm owners who access the Internet remotely, and transfer applications and files via their infrared port." The McAfee VirusScan Wireless 2.0 product is a featured component of the McAfee Wireless family of products. The product is supported by McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), the world's leading anti-virus research organization and the team that first identified the world's first wireless virus. McAfee AVERT is a 24x7 global research organization that works closely with McAfee Wireless customers and the anti-virus community to ensure up-to-date diagnostics, cures and protection from new wireless viruses. Cures are developed by the combined efforts of McAfee AVERT researchers and McAfee AutoImmune technology, which applies advanced heuristics and sophisticated programming to generate cures for previously undiscovered viruses. Pricing and Availability McAfee VirusScan Wireless 2.0 is available immediately and starts at $28 per node for 500 nodes. The VirusScan Wireless product is available directly from McAfee as a stand-alone solution and is compatible with the Palm, Microsoft Pocket PC, and Symbian EPOC platforms.
