McAfee Retail Software Introduces Virus Protection for Popular PDAs

Tags:
Nov. 7 -- McAfee Retail Software today launched the McAfee VirusScan Wireless product, one of the retail industry's first Internet virus security solutions that protects consumers from Internet viruses and malicious code transferred via personal digital assistant (PDA) devices. McAfee VirusScan Wireless software provides award-winning anti-virus protection for the leading PDA platforms including Palm OS, PocketPC, Windows CE and Symbian EPOC devices.
The release of VirusScan Wireless software comes in advance of what is projected to be the busiest time of the year in terms of PDA sales. More than 2.5 million PDAs will be purchased in the U.S. alone in 2000, with a large portion of sales coming during the holiday season according to NPD INTELECT Market Tracking, a leading provider of sales tracking services for the information technology industry. These projections represent twice the number of PDAs sold in 1999 and signal the growing need for protection against viruses like "Phage" that target handheld devices.

"With millions of consumers already trusting McAfee VirusScan technology to protect their PCs from viruses, they will turn to McAfee to protect their PDAs as well," said Diane Seghposs, vice president for McAfee Retail Software. "The real strength of McAfee VirusScan Wireless software is that it supports popular PDA platforms today rather than offering support for only one platform."

McAfee VirusScan Wireless software offers consumers a simple installation and update process including protection for all major PDA devices. With VirusScan Wireless software, files are scanned during synchronization between the PC and PDA. The software provides a streamlined update process to ensure that all known viruses are constantly detected.

Additional Features:
  • Superior Detection and Cleaning Technology -- Based on the reliable, high-quality McAfee scanning and detection engine that protects over 60 million desktops around the world, VirusScan Wireless software uses the same award-winning technology to ensure handheld users are continuously protected from even the most recent security threats.

  • Protection Against Virus Entry Points -- Handheld devices create a potential entry point for virus infection of users' PCs. VirusScan Wireless technology shields users computers from viruses that may reside on a PDA resulting from unprotected synchronization or infrared data transfers. This protects users' digital assets by blocking viruses that may enter through back doors left open by handheld devices.

  • Support for Popular Handheld Platforms -- VirusScan Wireless technology provides consumers with a broad range of support for popular handheld platforms including Palm OS, PocketPC, Windows CE and Symbian EPOC devices.

  • Global Anti-Virus Research Support -- VirusScan Wireless technology is supported by the global research capabilities of McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), one of the world's leading anti-virus research organizations.

  • Pricing and Availability
McAfee VirusScan Wireless software is available for an estimated street price of $29.00, and can be purchased at retailers nationwide or by visiting www.mcaffee-at-home.com.
