Malaysia Airlines Announces Cabin RedesignAugust 11, 2004--Word is out about Malaysia Airlines plans for a total cabin redesign on the fleet's 32 Boeing 747 and 777 aircraft. The much-awaited makeover will begin this fall, with the first renovated planes making their debut in December 2004. According to Vladimir Velasco, marketing manager for North America, the transformation will take 18 months to complete system-wide. "It's likely that we'll have some of the upgraded aircraft on the flights in and out of the US as early as first quarter 2005." Passengers will enjoy new sleeper seats in business and first class, as well as a reduced number of seats in the first class section. Buddy seats (first class only) are ottoman-type seats that will allow friends or family to pull up next to another passenger to visit or dine together. New menus, developed by well-known chefs, will be featured in all classes. An a la carte service allows passengers to choose from an array of ethnic, vegetarian and organic meals. Personal breadbaskets will be filled with artisan breads, and all new china, cutlery and linens will be introduced. When passengers first board Malaysia Airlines, they will be provided with a leather-bound personal compendium, that details the flight itinerary, meal service and other details. The entire plane will have an upgraded in-flight entertainment system, and in first and business classes, extras include noise-reduction headphones, mood lighting in the cabin; electronic window shutters and touch-screen monitors. Luxury lavatories will be larger than standard, making it easy to change clothes. Business travelers will have satellite phone, fax and air-to-ground services; seat to seat telephone. The interiors of the planes will have an all-new designer look, with a modern color scheme throughout. The entire flight crew will sport new uniforms. "This is a major undertaking, but we have listened and responded to what our passengers want in total comfort and service," said Velasco. "That's why Malaysia Airlines has been voted the World's Best Cabin Crew for the past three years by Skytrax Research."
