Japan's NTT: US Market Attractive
TOKYO (AP) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. refused to comment Tuesday on whether it is in
talks with U.S. mobile phone companies about taking stakes in those firms,
though the company said the U.S. market is attractive.
The NTT DoCoMo statement came after the Financial Times newspaper reported Tuesday that DoCoMo was negotiating with ATT Corp. about taking a minority stake in ATT's wireless unit, ATT Wireless Group. The newspaper attributed its report to one person close to the negotiations. The newspaper also said DoCoMo is in talks with Cingular Wireless, a joint venture between SBC Communications Inc. and Bellsouth Corp. NTT DoCoMo currently has tie-ups with KPN Mobile N.V., Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.'s telephone arm, Hutchison 3G U.K. Holdings, and the Japanese unit of America Online Inc. NTT DoCoMo said it is seeking form alliances with mobile phone operators, Internet service providers, application service providers and content providers. According to the Times, NTT DoCoMo is considering taking a stake of between 10 percent and 20 percent in ATT Wireless, which would cost between $5 billion and $10 billion. ATT's asking price is believed to be the biggest obstacle in the talks, the report said. View the streaming video of the DoCoMo here.
