Garmin Mobile to Supply GPS Navigation to Cell Phones
Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAVTEQ expands its relationship with Garmin International, Inc. as the digital map provider for Garmin Mobile, its newest GPS-navigation application for mobile phone users. Garmin Mobile, a new application that leverages Garmin's expertise in portable automotive navigation, delivers maps, directions, and automatic turn-by-turn routing to wireless phones. The application is Garmin's first product offering that targets the emerging location-based services market, and is currently offered by Sprint on select Sprint PCS handsets.
The Garmin Mobile application is a server-based navigation application that visually depicts and constantly updates the user's position on a detailed moving map. The application also has the ability to:
-- Calculate the fastest route to the destination, and provide spoken
turn-by-turn directions while the customer is on the Nationwide Sprint
PCS Network
-- Audibly announce the name of upcoming streets with its text-to-speech
function
-- Recalculate the quickest way to get back on track, should a user
navigate incorrectly
-- Navigate to an address anywhere in the United States and Puerto Rico,
or search millions of points of interest, like hotels, restaurants or
businesses, and dial their phone numbers automatically -- for
reservations, hours of operation, or other information
-- Manage destinations and personal locations online by accessing the
Garmin Mobile Manager website ( http://mobile.garmin.com )
The broad coverage and high level of accuracy of the NAVTEQ map data enables the Garmin Mobile application to route users door to door throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. NAVTEQ's proprietary data collection process involves driving the roads to capture the reality of the roadway including attributes such as access restrictions, one-way streets and speed categories that help optimize navigation. Additionally, the NAVTEQ database includes Points of Interest (POI) in approximately 50 different categories including restaurants, gas stations, hotels and banks, which allows users to transition seamlessly from routing to accessing information relative to what is around them.
"Garmin consistently provides both high quality and excellence in its products and is recognized as a leader in navigation," said Winston Guillory, senior vice president, North American Sales for NAVTEQ. "NAVTEQ is pleased to be a part of Garmin's growing portfolio of navigation products."
"Garmin Mobile exposes an entirely new group of consumers to turn-by-turn navigation," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's vice president of marketing. "As the mobile market adopts location-based services, it is important that the experience be consistently reliable and accurate. NAVTEQ plays a vital role in achieving this goal."
Garmin Mobile is available on a number of Sprint PCS handsets, including select Sprint PCS multimedia phones. Current Sprint PCS Vision subscribers using these models can download the Garmin Mobile application to their phone from Sprint PCS Vision and can subscribe to Garmin Mobile service today for $9.99 per month.
