DotPhoto Announces 4xD Format for Digital Camera Users
March 16, 2004 – dotPhoto, Inc., a leading photo-sharing and digital photography web site, announced today 4xD (“D” for digital) Format, a new photo print size designed specifically for digital camera users, so digital photos can be printed as is, without cropping out part of the photo or reducing it and adding borders.
DotPhoto’s new 4xD Format print size solves the long-standing digital camera aspect ratio problem -- a mismatch between digital cameras that use a 4:3 aspect ratio and their prints, which are processed using 35mm’s 3:2 aspect ratio. The result for digital camera users used to be that the original image area of their photo would get cropped by 11% in order to conform to the traditional 4x6 print size. With dotPhoto’s 4xD Format, the digital camera’s image is now completely displayed on high quality prints of 4”x5.33” paper without the need for cropping or boarders.
“Customers will be pleasantly surprised that they can finally get full-frame, borderless prints from their digicams with the 4xD format,” said photo industry consultant and columnist Don Sutherland. “Photo labs’ past explanations about mismatched aspect ratios just sounded like excuses to consumers who were used to getting prints from their old film camera.”
“We are very excited to introduce a solution to the digital camera print size problem for dotPhoto customers,” said Glenn Paul, President & Co-founder, dotPhoto, Inc. “The digital vs. film aspect ratio conflict has been a major problem plaguing photo processing until now.”
For users who still prefer to receive their prints in the 4”x6” size (instead of 4”x5.33”), dotPhoto offers the option to have the photo automatically cropped or the user may choose the no-crop option with white borders to preserve the image’s original aspect ratio.
