Curaçao To See Rare Hybrid Eclipse

March 2005 – Getting hit by lightning, finding a four-leaf clover, winning the lottery and seeing a hybrid eclipse all have one thing in common – they are extremely rare occurrences. However, on April 8, 2005, your chances of seeing a hybrid eclipse are 100% if you are in Curaçao.

This rare form of eclipse, which begins as an annular eclipse (moon appears smaller than the sun), switches to a total eclipse (moon appears larger than the sun), and then swaps back to annular, will be able to be seen from select geographic locations, and the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao is one of them.

“What better place to experience this natural phenomenon then a Caribbean island – not only can you view this once in a lifetime event, but you can do it on a spectacular island with fabulous accommodations and plenty of culture, diversity and activities,” said Jim Hepple, Director of Tourism. “You can turn this exceptional viewing event into a tropical vacation.”

In recognition of this rare opportunity, Papagayo Beach Resort is offering a special Eclipse Package from April 4, 2005 – April 20, 2005. The hotel is offering a 3-night stay in a large two-bedroom sea-view villa for $325, based on double occupancy. The eclipse can be viewed from the beautiful Jan Thiel Beach and the package includes protective eclipse eye glasses for safe viewing, complimentary local transportation, chaise lounges at the pool and a dive shop within walking distance - a true vacation with a “view.” For reservations call 1-800-652-2962 or e-mail chrissy@caribresortstms.com.

The Hilton Curaçao is also offering an eclipse viewing package available from April 6 – 14th, 2005 with rates starting as low as $155 a night. The Hilton features two beaches, an infinity swimming pool, a kids club and pool, Livingwell Health and Beach club, complete spa, watersports and diving and the package includes buffet breakfast and eclipse safety glasses. For reservations call 1-877-GO-HILTON or go to www.hiltoncaribbean.com/curacao. Refer to the Bounce Back package, plan code BB, when booking.

The last hybrid eclipse occurred on March 29, 1987 and this rare occurrence won’t happen again until 2023.

Curaçao, located outside of the hurricane belt, boasts an eclectic mix of history and culture, which has served to create a Caribbean experience like no other.
