Cobra Electronics Takes Two-Way Communications to the Next Level

(Nasdaq: COBR) today unveiled a new product that brings to market a five-mile range two-way radio combining the best features of the family radio service (FRS) and general mobile radio service (GMRS) categories into a new GMRS radio.

Continuing its tradition of innovation, Cobra's PR 900-DX incorporates the compact design and lightweight size of its microTALK FRS products with two watts of power for the extended five-mile range of its GMRS products. The new product is the first Cobra two-way radio to feature built-in VOX, enabling users to conduct a hands-free conversation.

Competitively priced, the PR 900-DX is a licensed family use radio, sold as a single unit or in a two-pack. Sold individually, the PR 900-DX includes earbud/speaker microphone rechargeable NiMH batteries and a charger adapter at a suggested retail price of $109.95. Due to high demand for extended-range products, Cobra also offers this product in pairs. Cobra is the only manufacturer currently offering GMRS products in pairs, with a suggested retail price for the PR 900-DX 2 of $149.95. The PR 900-DX is available now at national and regional retailers, such as Best Buy, Sears, Ace Hardware and Amazon.com.

The new PR 900-DX gives on-the-go families a safe and fun way to stay in touch at amusement parks, shopping malls, sporting events or around the neighborhood. Because of its small, sturdy design, the PR 900-DX is also ideal for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, fishing and skiing, providing consumers with a dependable way to keep in touch with others in their group within an even longer range.

Cobra's PR 900-DX offers access to 15 communications channels and 38 privacy codes for each channel, allowing for 570 possible channel combinations. The model has a backlit LCD display for easy viewing at night or in dark conditions. The new radio also offers Call Alert(R), enabling one unit to ring another simply by pushing the "call" button, and a Key Lock Feature to eliminate accidental channel change.

For communication in congested areas, the PR 900-DX includes Priority Scan, a feature allowing users increase the monitoring frequency of a particular channel while in the scan mode, and Busy Channel Lock-Out, a GMRS courtesy feature that does not allow for a radio user to disrupt another while in the transmit mode.
