Canon Introduces the Perfect Accessory for the Audrey Internet Appliance

Chrono CrossFollowing Tuesday morning's announcement from 3Com Corp.of its new Internet appliance, Audrey, Canon Computer Systems Inc. ("CCSI") will introduce Audrey's exclusive printer companion, the BJC-85W at a 3Com event in New York Tuesday.

Sleek and slim, this miniature color Bubble Jet printer comes in a stylish white color to coordinate with Audrey and features built-in printer drivers -- thus, no software installation is required. The BJC-85W printer connects to Audrey with a white USB cable included with the printer. Consumers simply choose the "print" function and the BJC-85W printer prints e-mails, maps, calendar and other Web information.

The compact BJC-85W printer is designed to fit on countertops or shelves in the homes of sophisticated Internet Appliance families and will ship in October with an estimated street price of $299.

"Canon is taking its Bubble Jet printing technology into every room in the house," said John Arnos, senior vice president of sales, marketing and customer care for CCSI.

"The BJC-85W printer -- which most likely will be used with Audrey in nerve centers of consumers' homes -- joins our other Internet Appliance printer for the living room environment, the Canon LR-1 PrintStation, as well as Canon's full line-up of desktop color Bubble Jet printers which can be found in home offices and kids' rooms. We're excited about having multiple printer offerings for our customers and reaching new end-users with the BJC-85W printer."

"Audrey puts schedules, messages, e-mail, Internet access and information right on kitchen countertops -- or anywhere consumers desire," said Don Fotsch, vice president and general manager of 3Com's Internet Appliance Division.

"In this home environment, printing is still essential when consumers need hard copies of recipes, stock quotes, news, maps or homework. When we evaluated the printer options available, we chose Canon based on its superior technology, design leadership and miniaturization. The compact BJC-85W printer lets consumers print from Audrey with ease and quality."

According to Internet Appliance market analyst group, Park Associates (Dallas), more than 22 million in-home Internet appliances (defined as non-PC devices that access the Internet), will be sold in 2001 -- compared with 18 million home PCs.

"The market for Internet Appliances will grow rapidly," said Tricia Parks, president of Parks Associates. "This provides a huge opportunity to numerous industries involved in the development of products and services that take advantage of the Internet."

The BJC-85W printer, which is based on Canon's award-winning BJC-85 portable color Bubble Jet printer, offers Audrey users simple out-of-box connectivity and support, as well as platform support for Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows CE 2.1, Palm OS (drivers purchased separately), iMac, Power G3/G4 and iBook.

The just over-three-pound printer, which has an easy-close hinged lid, also uses the same cartridges as the BJC-85 printer including Canon's exclusive Photo Inks and can hold up to 30 sheets of paper with its built-in automatic sheet feeder. The BJC-85W printer also has an optional NiMH battery with a life of 200 pages on a single charge at an estimated street price of $85.

The BJC-85W printer is available where Audrey will be sold starting this month at Best Buy, Bloomingdale's CompUSA, J&R, RCS Data Systems, Amazon or 3Com's e-commerce site at www.3comergo/ergo. Customers will also be able to purchase the BJC-85W printer from CCSI's e-Store at www.estore.ccsi.canon.com. The printer has a one-year limited warranty and optional extended service plan.
