I have a Minolta Maxxum 5000i that will not go into auto focus mode. It works fine in manual focus and that is how I usually use it. But, it would be nice to be able to use auto focus too. I does not matter which lens that I put on the camera, it will not come out of manual focus. Ant suggestions that anyone has would be a great help as I like the camera and want to continue to use it.

Now the system makes another nonsense out of that link. What I meant to say that in the first google request the google machine found my beginning words of Apr. 12th in this thread, which actually should have been protected by password. I then only copied and pasted that link in the last very recent (minutes ago) regular post. coming out as some beststuf.com link. It is not my intention to criticize beststuff in any way, since we still can have this forum and use for free, just a hint for the webmasters. Databases can develop their own lifes on their own with no understandable reason, let alone any intention.

Good Night,

Thanks, that makes very sense now, one can only learn by the photo-groups, a regular nowadays in a photostore would not know about, leave alone me.

btw, sorry for the late reply, I was once again thrown out by the system and had to request a new log-in password again, IIRC the third or 4th time after the board had switched to RSS style. However, if of any interest, I learned by googling for my real name this:

http://www.beststuff.com/forum/profile.php?21,559

With the correct last entry of Apr. 12th this year (under the old password written). When I signed in with the new sent password this evening to write this at all, the same URL appeared under google but saying last entry Apr. 8th. That does not bother me personally at all, only for the record, there are apparently some bugs in the system, especially in connection with google

>Is there any technical advantage over a normal one?

Yes, there is. Often, a hood will block the lower right corner of a rangefinder's viewfinder. I suppose there are the rare models where the viewfinder is placed on the far left, rather than the far right of the camera body. In that case, the hood will block the lower left corner of the viewfinder.

A vented rangefinder only blocks the viewfinder along the circumference of the hood, aiding in composition. They are very useful, indeed.

[Portable Audio and Video] Off-Air Antennas Are Back

There are many converter boxes on the market, with more coming. As with any new technology, their quality, efficiency and price vary considerably. So the selection of a converter box will be an important variable to desired digital reception.

But an even larger variable is the choice of the right antenna.
Most TV consumers think of antennas as low-tech devices, but there is more behind some of the newer antenna designs than just bent metal and plastic. Many of the TV antenna designs on the market today, such as the Yagi and rabbit ears have technology roots going back 30 to 50 years or more.

The switch to digital broadcasts however is bringing consumers back to Off-Air reception and the increasing sales are providing the motivation and investments necessary to develop new models and new technology. The fact that most designs on the market now were developed prior to the advent of much of the computer technology, software and algorithms in common use today, left open numerous avenues to improve upon tried and true designs and develop new ones. Additionally, recent regulations and standards are opening new doors for antenna engineers to develop smaller antennas with improved performance and aesthetics.

The correct antenna, installed and aimed properly (considering obstructions) will receive desired local stations it’s aimed at, including those multi-cast programming and several in HD, almost completely uncompressed, not available from cable or satellite. Some viewers may even be able to receive some or all of available out-of-town channels, carrying blacked out sports programs or network broadcasts not available in home towns.
As an added benefit, an OTA antenna provides reception for second sets in homes not wired for whole-house signal distribution.

While cable and satellite program providers will continue to serve the great majority of homes as the primary signal source, missing HD local reception, compression issues, higher costs, billing add-ons, service outages, contact difficulties, in-home service waits and no shows have left many of these subscribers looking to OTA antennas as alternatives and backup.

Depending on the level of desire to receive an excellent picture and multiple broadcast signals, considering the investment in TV entertainment already made by many viewers, they should consider up-grading to a new Digital Off-Air Antennas.

[Portable Audio and Video] How to convert files from iTunes Music Store

A lot of people complain about the DRM found on music bought at the iTunes Music Store. This is quite natural, since iTunes is by far the biggest supplier of music files, and the only legal place to buy files that play on iPods. iTunes only allows you to upload the files to a few iPods, burn them to a few CDs, and play them on a few computers. And you can only upload files to YOUR iPods; If someone else's iPod is set to play music from their account, the only way to put music from YOUR account into their iPod is to re-set that iPod to your account (which requires erasing all the music in it). And if you want to get music DOWN from an iPod, then this is basically impossible. So you need converter which help you to solve such drm-problem.

One such program is Melodycan. All you have to do is open it, adjust the settings if you want, pick a back-up folder and start the conversion (maximum summary converting speed is 50x ). Nothing could be easier. If you have the latest version of this program and the right version of iTunes, though, you`ll haven`t any problems.

What about iTunes-purchased videos? I heared that the only way to break the DRM on videos you buy at the iTunes Music Store (such as movies, music videos, and TV shows) is to use Melodycan. Essentially, it "watches" the movies you bought (if your computer is slow, it will go slower than real time, to make sure it captures every frame and synchs the sound properly), and records them into a new file that is not DRM'ed. You can change the settings so as to choose the format and properties (resolution, framerate, bitrate, compression algorithm) of the new file. I tried free trial and like conversion speed and quality.

Here's how you can download a video from YouTube. It surprises me that so many people don't know you can download videos from YouTube onto your hard drive, watch them on your iPod, etc. YouTube has just about every music video ever made.

Step one is to go to the YouTube page where the video is displayed. If you see a page on some random website with a YouTube video on it, you need to go to the YouTube page that shows that video. This can usually be accomplished by clicking on the video itself. Not on the big "Play" button (sideways triangle) in the middle, and not in the little buttons (Play, Pause, etc) or the slider along the bottom, but anywhere on the rest of the video. If the video is playing, clicking right on the image will do it. So if someone embeds a YouTube video on their blog, you usually need to click on the video (not on the buttons along the bottom, and not on the "Play" button in the middle of the video, but anywhere else, on the video itself) in order to go to the YOUTUBE page that shows that video. Once you're on the page that shows the video on the site that the video is hosted by (YouTube), on your browser's address bar, you see a URL (address).

MelodyCan YouTubeRipper is a plug-in for Internet Explorer. MelodyCan supports MP4 and AVI as output formats for video conversion. You can select a desired output format and video size in MelodyCan settings by choosing a suitable encoder for video files. Just click on "Rip YouTube File" button on your Internet Explorer toolbar and the selected video will be saved to your PC in a desired format. The video will download to your hard drive! (To whatever folder you specified). That could take a couple minutes.

What if you want to add this video to your iTunes library, play it on your iPod, or play it on your PSP? You then need to convert it to Mpeg4 format. To do this, I highly recommend MelodyCan Ultra Video version, a great program that converts video so that it plays on the PSP (but the video files it outputs will also play on iPods and other devices). MelodyCan has pretty good instructions, and plenty of information online. It will convert any videos into Mpeg 4 or AVI easily .

The center cases I'll have to do with a die grinder. I can't take the cylinder off, so that will make it harder. My main concern is the case by the stator cover, has alot of nooks and cranies.
MelodyCan YouTubeRipper plug-in for Internet Explorer is an easy to use program to download video files from Youtube site. Everything you need is to click on the button on the Internet Explorer toolbar and autimatically downloading and conversion will start. MelodyCan YouTubeRipper automatically converts downloaded files into the most important audio (MP3, OGG, AAC, M4A...) and video (MP4, WMV, 3GP, AVI...) file formats. All you need to do is to select the videos you'd like to have downloaded and MelodyCan YouTubeRipper takes care of the rest.

I have never personally heard of this product but I wish I had, MelodyCan allows you to remove the DRM protection on many video and audio formats, which if you are a legal payee, you will probably need!

[Russiancamera-user] Vented Lens Shades For Everyone!!!

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=32&from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=40.5mm+hood&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=ZIP%2FPostal&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32&fsoo=2

Where were all of these when I started collecting Russian cameras in 2002? I remember the old Voigtlander hoods going for $50! Any vintage vented hood started at $50. Now, they must be making them in China and giving them away!

Be careful, though. The ones that sell for $2.98 only discount 6 cents per item on shipping, so you end up paying just as much for them as most of the other ones.

But, these are still good prices and so many to choose from. Vented shades are great for rangefinders.
