White Noise CD Launched as an Answer to Colicky or Fussy Babies
August 9, 2004 - Hush Baby is a new 70-minute CD available from Hush Baby Products that uses pure white noise to soothe, calm and quiet even the most colicky baby - and help both newborns and parents to enjoy a good night's sleep. The CD is now available at www.hush-baby.com for $14.99.
The average six-week old infant typically cries about three hours a day; half of healthy infants cry even more. Considering most infants this age are awake about eight hours a day that means some infants can spend more than half their waking time crying. That doesn't even account the 25 percent of babies suffering from colic. No wonder there are a lot of exhausted new parents!
Many experts believe that babies become fussy and cry because they are simply over stimulated by their new environment. For many babies who enjoyed a quiet, peaceful existence in utero, it is a tough adjustment to the loud sounds and bright lights of their new home.
The Hush Baby CD calms babies by recreating the sounds they heard in their mom's womb. These sounds, known as white noise, mask and cancel out other noises that may over stimulate babies. White noise is a combination of sound frequencies in equal amounts. Sometimes described as a soothing "whoosh' or the sound of wind blowing through the trees, white noise can calm people of all ages, as well as newborns with or without colic symptoms.
What makes the Hush Baby CD so special is that it is a personal creation born from one woman's challenge to comfort her own newborn who was suffering from colic. When Joan Petrillo, founder of Hush Baby Products, was told her 12 -day- old son Gianni had colic, the baby's pediatrician and her OB-GYN both suggested that playing a CD with white noise might help.
Petrillo didn't buy one CD; she bought seven. When none of them worked, Petrillo decided to create her own white noise CD, never thinking that she was starting a new business.
At the time, Petrillo was on a single-minded mission that every new parent understands-she wanted to make her baby comfortable, and she definitely wanted to stop the crying so she could get some sleep. Fortunately, she had a friend who owned a state-of-the art recording studio who volunteered to help Petrillo find just the right white sound to quiet her baby, Gianni.
"I wanted to create a CD with white noise that simulated the sounds that a baby hears inside the womb-the sounds of the blood whooshing through the body and the sounds of the digestive track," said Petrillo.
For almost six weeks Petrillo brought Gianni into the recording studio and experimented with hundreds of white noise sounds until she found just the right mix that worked to calm him down. "When I started experimenting I assumed that the sound of a heart beat would definitely be included, but surprisingly, Gianni didn't respond well to the heart beat sound, so I didn't include it."
Feeling like she had succeeded in her mission, Petrillo was happy to loan out her home-made white noise CD to a neighbor, cautioning that the CD was made specifically to calm Gianni and that she wasn't sure if it would work on any other babies.
It not only worked for the neighbor's baby, it worked for her neighbor's friends' babies as well. Soon, Petrillo was getting hundreds of requests for her white noise CD.
Now, Petrillo's white noise CD, Hush Baby, is available for $14.99 at www.hush-baby.com to help all parents and newborns. Petrillo offers a 100 percent money back guarantee just in case there is a baby out there that doesn't respond as well as her own infant.
While the CD is now available exclusively on the website, Petrillo is hoping that the CD will soon be available in boutiques throughout the country.
