Big Fortune Hidden in Big Data Files

 The Wizard of Oz

"Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma."Wizard, The Wizard of Oz, MGM (1939)

Maybe the computer never delivered on the promise of the paperless office, but it did open the floodgate on one thing … data.

The result has been a data explosion:

  • 1,203 Exabytes of digital info was created, replicated around the globe last year
  • 1 Petabyte of new info has been produced every 15 seconds this year
  • The annual growth in information is 59 percent

All of this is because people want to do it themselves (O.K., maybe companies "encouraged/pushed us a little") with ATMs, self check-in/check-out, email/video/tweets, online tell your life story, personalized TV/video/music entertainment, online travel/banking/paying/shopping.Read more

You Can Never Be Too Good Looking, Too Slim, Have Too Much Storage

 Thank You for Smoking, 2005

"Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. 'Thank God we invented the... you know, whatever device.'"Jeff Megall, Thank You for Smoking, 2005, 20th Century Fox

Ours is a typical American/Silicon Valley family – two early adopters, two chasm straddlers.

Our inventory includes -- four notebooks, three smartphones/one feature phone, one iPad, two looking, three 500GB external HDs, 2TB home storage, various other PC/CE devices.

The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project reinforced the fact we can be home now and then and that it's not just the new, hot, sexy on-the-go gadgets.

Smartphones, tablets (O.K., iPads) are on everyone's gotta' have list; but they aren't the Alpha-Omega for folks.

Nope. If you're a typical alpha male or female, you have an array of gadgets and a gotta' get list for the rest.Read more

12 Things That Will Cost Less in 2011

By Beth Pinsker, Editorial Director of dealnews

 LG BD590

One of the great things about technology is that we can count on prices dropping at a steady clip over time on the things we want most. The more demand, the faster the electronics industry seems to satisfy us with new, cheaper products. Think how different it is for non-electronic items such as milk and cereal, which always seem to go up (see our list of 20 Things That Will Be More Expensive in 2011). We've now proven this mathematically, by sifting through thousands upon thousands of tech deals that we've listed over the past couple of years.

Our price trend data shows how prices dropped on 12 popular items from 2009 to 2010, based on the individual deals we list on our site. Then we keyed up our dealnews experts to find out what low price points you'll likely see in 2011. Just a note on our process: The data for this analysis is derived from "deals" that were previously listed on dealnews.com. By definition, all deals on dealnews are price-checked, verified offers — "the lowest total price we've seen" — so the data used for dealnews predictions is based on low prices, not average prices. Refurbished deals are excluded. We correct for anomalies like outliers, floor effects and disruptive new technologies that influence pricing trends. Read more
