Wherify Wireless and SiRF Team to Deliver Child Locator System
The Wherify Personal Location System includes a wristwatch-sized device that combines SiRF's SiRFstarII GPS technology, along with LSI Logic's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology that allows device communication through a national PCS network. As a result, subscribers of the Personal Location System will be able to quickly determine, via a 24x7 Wherify Location Service Center accessed through the Internet or by any phone, the location of their children, mentally-impaired seniors or other at-risk loved ones wearing the device.
"Having developed the first comprehensive, end-to-end location system, Wherify fully intends to continue to partner with industry leaders, like SiRF Technology, to deliver other innovative wireless location products and services for m-commerce, asset tracking, pet care and law enforcement that bring greater security and real value to consumers and businesses," said Timothy Neher, Wherify Wireless founder and chairman. "We also chose to partner with SiRF because of their chip's compact size and GPS technology that can receive satellite data in often hard to reach places -- including under dense foliage, in steep ravines and in urban canyons."
The location process will typically take less than a minute and will identify the location of the wearer of the device within several feet. In the event of an emergency, either the child or guardian can request an emergency 911 response and local police will be dispatched. The Wherify Personal Location System will be available to consumers this summer.
"We founded SiRF on the vision of bringing GPS-enabled location technology to the consumer market -- child and elderly locators have always been an important part of our mission, as these types of devices bring more safety, security and peace-of-mind to our daily lives," said Kanwar Chadha, founder of SiRF. "We will continue to partner with innovative companies like Wherify, who are helping us make our vision a reality -- and the world a safer place -- by deploying an entire end-to-end location system that combines devices, technology and services."
Because of its compact size and self-sufficiency, SiRF's SiRFstarII technology can enable GPS on a single chip set the size of a postage stamp, making it possible for manufacturers and service providers, like Wherify Wireless, to create very small GPS-based products, such as wristwatches or lockets.
