Walmart First to Sell New Category of PCFeb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Lindows.com, Inc. announced today at the Desktop Linux Summit the introduction of LindowsFamily ( www.lindows.com/family ), the first computer with built-in protection for households seeking a safer Internet experience. LindowsFamily computers are affordable PCs that include a set of features, which provide a family-friendly computing experience which effectively block unwanted materials, but still allows a rich Internet experience. A line LindowsFamily computers are now available from Walmart's retail website, walmart.com and from other leading builders at under $300 ( www.lindows.com/family ). "Most families require their kids to spend their online time on the living room computer because they're wary of all the garbage on the net," said Michael Robertson, CEO of Lindows.com. "The LindowsFamily computer makes possible our vision of a computer in every room by addressing a big issue -- safety. Parents have been waiting for a family friendly and affordable option and that's what the family computer brings them." LindowsFamily offers the only integrated web filtering service that will work out of the box on all network connections whether standard dialup, cable modem, DSL or other broadband connection. Not only does LindowsFamily work with all internet connections, but it also works with any web software including web browsers and e-mail programs. Early testers reported that one of their favorite features of LindowsFamily was the ability to not-only block pornographic images from web-surfing, but from spam messages in their e-mail as well. When compared to dialup client solutions, LindowsFamily has clear advantages. "MSN and AOL's Parental Controls only lull the parents into thinking that there is meaningful protection in place. Most parents are shocked to find out that their children can circumvent MSN's Parental Controls ( www.lindows.com/surfsafe_compare ) by simply double clicking on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop once they're online," commented Michael Robertson. "These services basically only offer 'one-window' security. Web filtering protection needs to be built into the operating system to be effective and that's what we've done with LindowsFamily." Included with every LindowsFamily computer is a year-long subscription to the new SurfSafe filtering service (a $49 value) which blocks inappropriate websites or images throughout the computing experience. SurfSafe is powered by Cerberian, using a server-based database of millions of URLs, which is updated daily to keep current with the tens of thousands of new, objectionable sites that are created weekly. In addition, artificial intelligence technology ensures an extra layer of protection for websites not yet categorized. LindowsFamily runs with LindowsOS, a modern operating system that delivers the power, stability and cost-savings of Linux with the ease of windows. One of the key features of LindowsOS, is its ability to install software with literally one click of the user's mouse. Rather than the traditional installation hassles (downloading, uncompressing, installing, etc.), with Click-N-Run everything is performed automatically and seamlessly. LindowsOS users can simply visit the Click-N-Run Warehouse ( www.lindows.com/warehouse ) and browse through hundreds of software titles. LindowsFamily is available immediately, for more information or to purchase, visit www.lindows.com/family . Source: Lindows.com, Inc.
