The Scorpion King Battles Onto Desktops
April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- While wrestling fans nationwide eagerly await the April 19, 2002 Universal Pictures' release of The Scorpion King, Serious USA, Inc. is preparing to explode onto computer screens with The Scorpion King CD Cardz. The set of four CD Cardz is based on characters from the film, including Memnon, Cassandra, Balthazar, and The Rock's character: Mathayus. The film, a spin-off of The Mummy series, is based on the character first introduced by The Rock in last year's The Mummy Returns, the sequel that jump-started the summer movie season on May 4, 2001 with a record-breaking, non-holiday opening weekend box office gross of $68.1 million and to date has grossed over $426 million dollars worldwide. Co-starring Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile), Kelly Hu and Peter Facinelli, the exciting action-adventure was written by Jonathan Hales, Stephen Sommers and Will Osborne, with Chuck Russell (The Mask, Eraser) directing. James Jacks, Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and Kevin Misher are the producers with Vince McMahon serving as executive producer.
"The Scorpion King is the latest installment of the very successful Mummy franchise and is a perfect compliment to our roster of CD Cardz," said Pamela Henning, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing and Communications. "The Cardz are the ideal showcase for the bold imagery and hot special effects in the movie, and we're very excited about our new retail partner FYE, the perfect vendor for The Scorpion King CD Cardz."
The Scorpion King CD Cardz will be available in stores nationwide, including select FYE (NASDAQ:TWMC) locations (Coconuts, Strawberries, Movies Plus, Saturday Matinee, Record Town, Tape World, Planet Music, Disc Jockey, and Reel Collections), beginning April 16. The Cardz include character postcards that can be e-mailed directly from each card. The Egyptian motif on the Cardz incorporates the same design techniques used by filmmakers to render special effects. The Cardz also feature an Egyptian-themed game where users uncover ancient Egyptian artifacts that lead to a hidden tomb and a special screensaver. Each of the Cardz features the movie trailer, still photographs from the movie, character bios, and more.
Inspired by the legendary Egyptian warrior, The Scorpion King is set 5000 years ago in the notorious city of Gomorrah, where an evil ruler is determined to lay waste to all the nomadic peoples of the desert. The few remaining tribes, never natural allies, have to unite or perish. Knowing their enemy relies on the visions of a sorcerer, they hire a skilled assassin, -more- Mathayus (The Rock), to eliminate the visionary.
After infiltrating the enemy camp, Mathayus discovers that the sorcerer is in fact a beautiful woman (Kelly Hu). Rather than eliminate her, he takes her deep into the desert badlands, knowing that the ruler's henchmen will stop at nothing to rescue her and bring her back. Seriously wounded in the ensuing battle, Mathayus must find the strength to lead his scrappy band of allies back to Gomorrah for a final confrontation.
Serious currently has nine titles in release including: The Scorpion King, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stargate SG1, Medabots, Jurassic Park III, The Outer Limits, Planet of the Apes, and Final Fantasy.
