Network Associates Announces WebImmune 2.0 From Avert Labs

March 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AVERT Labs, (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team) the world-class anti-virus research division of Network Associates, Inc. (NYSE:NET), today announced the newest version of its free web-based virus security service, WebImmune, delivering automated virus analysis and cures in real-time. As one of the first virus security scanners on the Internet, the WebImmune service delivers virus security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With more than 67,000 known virus threats that exist today and rapid pace at which Internet threats are spreading, it is crucial to have quick response time and direct access to immediate cures for virus threats.

Today's announcement of WebImmune 2.0 provides users with enhanced functionality and analysis including:

  • Expanded global monitoring -- Allows AVERT to monitor and segment virus trends by country, province or a specific business sector.
  • Secure Uploads -- Using embedded Secure Socket Layer technology, files no longer need to be submitted in a password protected ZIP format
  • Enhanced 'My Account' Options -- Easy access to account history with sorting tools give users more control over their account

The WebImmune service, based on AutoImmune technology, automatically detects and generates a cure for both known and unknown viruses. Once a file is submitted, the back-end technology decompresses, decrypts and certifies the file, which in turn authenticates the source to begin analysis. If a submitted file is infected, WebImmune will deliver the appropriate fix via the relevant DAT file in a matter of minutes. If, for some reason, the initial analysis of the file is inconclusive, the sample will automatically be passed on to an AVERT researcher for further analysis and response within a few hours.

Now with expanded tracking features, AVERT researchers can concurrently follow the spread of viruses by time zones, industry sectors and geographic location, which can aid in determining where a virus outbreak is most prevalent and can help stop the spread of Internet threats.

Until now, all submissions to WebImmune had to be uploaded through secure, password protected ZIP files, which added an extra step to a cure when users need a quick response to determining if their file is potentially infected. With embedded secure socket layer (SSL) technology, protection is now guaranteed for any files or data that is submitted to WebImmune. This allows quicker analysis of potentially infected files so that users can rest assured that they are not causing possible damage to their systems or network.

Additionally, the customer experience on WebImmune has been enhanced with new features on the 'My Account' page including a quick view page, which contains previously submitted samples, past history and emails submitted to AVERT, enhanced sorting tools that enable users to more readily find the ticket they want to view, and password retrieval functionality. Users can now quickly access their account information, even if they can't remember their password.

"As a global leader in anti-virus research, AVERT is continuing to push the envelope on the delivery of services and solutions to our customers to ensure that they have the best level of protection possible. The fact that WebImmune has received over 42,000 submissions is a testament to the ease-of-use and popularity of our technology," said Vincent Gullotto, vice president of AVERT Labs. "When determining if a file is infected with a virus or malicious code, users need a quick and accurate response and WebImmune fits the bill. With this service, we are continuing to deliver the tools and technology that our customers are asking for."
