Maxtor Ships New Hard Drive
Maxtor 541DX Offers the Highest Per Head Capacity on the Market Today And
Reduces Total Cost of Ownership for Entry-Level Desktop Systems, Emerging
Market Segments, and Consumer Electronics Applications
June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxtor Corporation (NYSE: MXO),
the world's largest hard drive manufacturer in terms of unit shipments, today
announced volume shipments of the new Maxtor 541DX, a 5400 RPM Ultra ATA/100
hard drive that targets the industry's capacity sweet spot of 20GB. The 541DX
at 20GB offers the highest areal density on the market today and is available
in a single-head, single-platter configuration.
The Maxtor 541DX is in qualification and planned for use by top global PC manufacturers and is strategically designed for additional emerging market applications such as game consoles, set-top boxes and digital audio players. "Since shipping the industry's first single-platter, single-head hard drive in February, Maxtor has enhanced performance in terms of capacity, seek times, acoustics, and reliability making it an ideal storage solution for many next generation products and applications," said Mike Cordano, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Maxtor. "The 541DX affirms Maxtor's commitment as the industry leader by shipping the most extensive line of innovative, high performance storage solutions to the market." Maxtor 541DX offers the highest areal density in the industry today with its single-head design at 20 GB per head. Other 3.5-inch drives on the market are designed to accommodate anywhere between two and eight heads, and between one and four platters to reach its designed capacity point. A major advantage of the Maxtor 541DX single-head design is a significant reduction in the number of parts required to build the drive which leads to less possible points of failure. Available in 10, 15 and 20 GB capacities, the Maxtor 541DX delivers improved reliability through Maxtor's proprietary inner diameter load/unload ramp technology. This technology locks the recording head into a protective carrier during shipment and when the drive is not operating. The 541DX also has a new, slim 17-mm form factor, which consumes 38 percent less space than conventional drives, allowing for better air circulation -- a key factor in promoting long-term data integrity. "Storage continues to be the key enabler for many next generation products. The Maxtor 541DX can easily reduce total cost of ownership and bring enhanced value to Maxtor customers in both the PC and emerging consumer markets," said Mark Geenen, president of leading data storage market research firm TrendFocus. "We believe Maxtor is well positioned in the market with the 20GB capacity point becoming the PC industry's 'sweet spot' during 2001."
